Hiding Behind Mother's Skirts - a Mother's Day Poem

April is National Poetry Month!

For National Poetry Month, I'm recycling one of my earlier poems. Since Mother's Day is drawing near, I thought this one might be appropriate.

a Poem for Mom

She used to hide

Behind mother’s skirts

Behind outlandish fantasies

Behind smiles that shied away.

Ever clinging

To handle-bars

To winsome wishes

To hands that held the past.

Loosening fingers

Letting go

Of silly secrets

And rainbow ribbons.

Lightly skipping

Purposeful stride

Head held high

A hand let go.

Fading chuckles

Deepened lines

Tired glances

With eyes wide open.

Faltered steps

Shaky hopes

Settling in

And looking back.

No longer hiding

Safety past

Only time

With raw regrets.

A picture tattered

Long skirt faded

A sad goodbye

And empty hand.

A fallen tear

In lonely silence

She feels behind

A growing shadow.

A life revolving

A world the same

A woman turns

And looks to see...

The little girl she thought

She’d left behind.

I wanted to read more of your poems because you were so kind in your post.

I love this poem, especially the last two lines... it puts all the images in context. lovely

A wonderful poem, I relate to this well. Even as a 51 year old I still feel like the little girl that I am inside.

And you have captured the transition so well, such a time of uncertainty and unfamiliarity.

Beautiful and real poetry. My votes to you.

Fennelseed, thank you! I was hoping to capture those feelings, because I have felt it myself. So good of you to comment.

My mother does not wear skirt, she wears sari and I remember myself, hiding behind her chewing the fringe of her sari.

Vinaya..."chewing the fringe" is a nice phrase and paints quite a poignant picture. Thanks for reading and sharing.

...wonderful evocative writing where each word 'counts' and has special meaning .......this piece also shows great maturity in your writing skills and demonstrates to me that you are a writer to watch for at the Hub and definitely a rising star!

Epi, coming from you, that means everything. I pulled this poem out of a box--something I had written years ago--and I spent quite some time going over every word. I'm glad it didn't go unnoticed. Your compliments mean more than I can express.

Thanks, Jackie. I appreciate your saying that, considering what your portfolio looks like. I look forward to reading more of yours, too. Thanks for the encouragement. I wrote all of my hubs in August and have been feeling discouraged, writing none in September. I know I need to get going again. Thanks!
