Poem: Second Chances

Updated on August 31, 2012
To change your life, start immediately, do it flamboyantly; no excuses.~William James
To change your life, start immediately, do it flamboyantly; no excuses.~William James

Setting the Tone

My father was always a very superstitious man. Early on, when hearing me sing in the wee hours of the morning, he would quote his immigrant grandfather and say, "If you sing in the morning, you will cry at night."

Oftentimes I've wondered if that philosophy set the tone for what was to be in my life. Though I allowed so much to bleed into the pores of my being, I never let it be transported into my son's life. Over the past 22 years, he has always happily played his music with or without vocal accompaniment, any hour of the day, and today, I happily sing along.

This piece is dedicated to those seeking second chances.

Second Chances

Seldom do we live to see a second chance.

We bury ourselves in condemnation.

I propose instead, to enjoy each day as if it were an unconditional gift.

Blessed are those who are lucky enough to catch life as its best.

To them, I raise my glass and say,

capture and hold tight that special moment in time,

for life passes by too quickly,

and, to wait for what lies ahead, might come too late---

the pleasures you experience today

will be lost in all your tomorrows............

Robin Grosswirth

End Note

The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind. ~~~~William James

Robin, thank you for writing about a topic that I have thought about almost everyday as I thank God for second chances. I ended a 27 year marriage and God has given me a second chance at love.

Thanks again for reminding us that life is not over when it seems to be over.

Robin, a song sung in the early morning is such a beautiful thought to wake up the soul. Refreshing and renewing! I hope you still do it today. I believe in second chances, I am living it. Beautiful poem.

What we say to people oftentimes sticks and weighs them down. We can choose to light another's candle or burn it out.

Thanks for the read from an amazing writer.

Great! This is a view that we we should all strive for. That quote from your father reminds me of many I heard from my mother, including a terribly sad lullaby she sang.

I speak your edubabble and I too gave many chances to students because I wanted to impart to them that particularly in writing, it is the process not just the product. In order to master anything, it takes time and we need to work on it and with it diligently in order to succeed.

Thanks for your service to students and enjoy your second love, writing. You are an amazing writer. Your students were fortunate.

I am a teacher, retired now, but of course I believe in second chances. Everyone should be given the opportunity of a second chance. With some students, I even gave a third chance. LOL Each day is a present, so I hope all enjoy today.

When we writers write, we have many things in mind, but sometimes it is nice to get a peek at part of the genesis, ergo, my sharing. Glad you enjoyed.

I was raised with many superstitions and shedding them is important, as well as not haphazardly passing them on.

A good poem, an important sentiment. And I like the back story you provided about your father and then how you raised your son. Sharing.

Thanks for stopping in Breakfastpop and for your accolades.

Sweethearts2, also thanks for taking the time to read and commune. I try to set the tone for the poetry reading; however, it is up to the reader to interpret it their own way and relate it to their lives.

Each sunrise gives us a second chance to enjoy the experience of the joy found in living one's life to the fullest. I pray each morning not to repeat the mistakes of yesterday. Beautiful writing and philosophy. I always enjoy how you preface your poetry.

...well there will be many more 2nd chances, Robin, for me to return to your hallowed hubspace, as I admire your writing so much for its philosophical content and this really nice introduction at the beginning in order to 'forward' this piece - your mind is profound and it shows so truly in the depth of these wise and majestic words - sending you warm wishes and good energy from lake erie time ontario canada 1:27pm

p.s. - my mum and dad had a lot of wise words too - often they ring true much later on in life as we get older ourselves and then we realize what they really mean ......

Thank you for sharing this work, we all may have a second chance in our lives and need to make the most of this. I thought my days were over back in 1990, but the good Lord, gave me that second chance, and I am still around today, and try to make the most of each precious day.

That was simply beautiful! I'm living my second chance; I should have died in 2006 but here I am today, livin' large and lovin' life, and I take nothing for granted now. Your writing is lyrical and I'm so glad you wrote this piece.
