Poem: Second Chances
Setting the Tone
My father was always a very superstitious man. Early on, when hearing me sing in the wee hours of the morning, he would quote his immigrant grandfather and say, "If you sing in the morning, you will cry at night."
Oftentimes I've wondered if that philosophy set the tone for what was to be in my life. Though I allowed so much to bleed into the pores of my being, I never let it be transported into my son's life. Over the past 22 years, he has always happily played his music with or without vocal accompaniment, any hour of the day, and today, I happily sing along.
This piece is dedicated to those seeking second chances.
Seldom do we live to see a second chance.
We bury ourselves in condemnation.
I propose instead, to enjoy each day as if it were an unconditional gift.
Blessed are those who are lucky enough to catch life as its best.
To them, I raise my glass and say,
capture and hold tight that special moment in time,
for life passes by too quickly,
and, to wait for what lies ahead, might come too late---
the pleasures you experience today
will be lost in all your tomorrows............
The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind. ~~~~William James
