Youthful Passion- Art by Steve Hanks
Youthful Passion- Art by Steve Hanks

Intimate Art

There are paintings that have a certain quality about them that drags the viewer in. You feel as if the artist has the ability to capture those moments that are intimate and evocative. Such art not only gives immense pleasure in viewing but also inspires me to create.

Paintings that connect in a way you are no longer an observer but a participant are a class above the rest. When I find art that invites me in, I want to share it with others to see if it has the same connections, the same intimacy with others that it conveys to me. It may be naive notion. Art influences each one differently. But surely there is a commonality in great art.

My attempt at discovering artists that are unfamiliar to me and then share it with others has resulted in some pleasing feedback. It is good to know how this shared act of appreciation creates a feeling of togetherness.

I recently came across the watercolours of Steve Hanks. I realised how the intimacy he portrays fitted so well with a poem I had written some time ago. A poem that in itself is an intimate exercise. Many of you have told me that in your comments- for which I am ever so grateful.

So when I went about rejuvenating my poem for here, Steve's watercolours seemed the right match. See what you think about the Steve Hanks sensational art and my own humble poem.

And do let me know ...

When I touch You

When I touch you...

There’s starlight in your eyes

I hear the music in your sighs

When I touch you...

There’s a tingle in the air

My fingers brushing through your hair

Moments pause and time stands still

Moving close is such a thrill

Let me drink you till my fill

You’re my drug my magic pill

When I touch you...

You curl up closer in my space

I kiss those worries off your face

When I touch you...

Tracing map lines on your skin

I like the way you glow within

You can read me like your books

Resting cheeks on shoulder crooks

Seeking treasures in all your nooks

Dreamy eyes and knowing looks

When I touch you...

Whispers keep those lips apart

I feel the thudding of your heart

When I touch you...

Mingling legs and twisted sheets

Love the way your body greets

Moonlit waves lap at the shore

I feel an earthquake in our core

Shaking knocking heaven’s door

Something tells me there is more

When I touch you...

There’s starlight in your eyes

I hear the music in your sighs

When I touch you....

When I touch you...

Steve Hanks

Born in San Diego in 1948, Steve Hanks grew up on the beaches of Southern California. The sunshine and sea had a profound influence on his childhood. He loved the beach, surfing and swimming to his hearts content. Later the family moved to New Mexico ( His father was in the US Navy) and Steve went to the Academy of fine Arts in San Francisco. His genius was apparent even in that early age, garnering him high grades in commercial art. He then got his Bachelors degree at the California college of Arts and Crafts.

When he took a job as a caretaker at a Campfire Girl's camp in New Mexico, Steve started experimenting with various media- oil, acrylic, watercolours. He feels that the enormous number of hours he put in playing with these materials improved his sense of light and shadow and enhanced his familiarity with the colour palette.

Steve soon found his niche in hyperrealistic watercolours that defy belief. His innate sense of light and colours, his ability to draw realistic figures soo drew a wider audience. Steve can not only portray sensual and hyperreal characters, he can also add so much intricate detail to his work that they have that sense of emotional intimacy. He calls his style 'Emotional Realism'.

Looking at his work, we can see why.

He is now a highly decorated american Water colour artist.

His Website is at Steve Hanks Collection

Whew! What can I say Mohan? Beautiful, sexy, passionate, tempting...all of the above. The paintings are truly gorgeous and tastily provocative.

Your poem, well, it kind of brings us right to where you want us...."closer in my space". No one can read this hub and not be moved, how they're moved, well let's leave that to the imagination.

Voted up, awesome, beautiful, and interesting.

      Mohan (Docmo),

I came back to read your poem another time. You have the ability to write from within yourself, to speak from your heart, like no one else I know.

This is a stunningly beautiful poem. Thank you for sharing your emotions with us, my friend.

I'm here studying you. This poem just so grabs me by the heartstrings and refuses to let go. Your 'technique' is so intimate here, if words could turn into physical entities, yours do in this piece. Whew! leaves readers breathless and wanting more...

Dotti, I rest my case. This is one of those comments I will save into a notebook just to remind myself " Yes. The poetry you write does grab a readers attention. The more receptive the reader is to understanding what you're trying to say and the way you're trying to say it - the better the reception". And you, dear Dotti, are the perfect recipient to such transmission. I am humbled, honored and grinning with pride. Thank you!

Ai-yi-yi!! I think every woman who reads this is wishing her man could vocalize these thoughts and images.. good grief this is a cold shower poem if ever there was one! Lovely images, erotic but equally and blissfully romantic. This is absolutely beautiful, and one of those I like to save into a notebook, to remind myself, "yes. this is poetry that grabs you by the throat and carries you breathless right to the last word. Awesome, voted up, and beautiful....wow!

Beautiful. Not only the word, but the flow of them, the piece as a whol..... Reminds me of someone that when he looked at me I swear he was looking into me. One touch from him seemed to change the universe. The romance has now cooled to a warm friendship that I treasure even more....

Its amazing how you capture these feeling so perfectly even those who have not experienced them can feel it.

beautiful imagery... before I read your poem I was thinking how2 beautiful that recent lunar eclipse was but now, after reading your poem and how moon's clouds suggested to you the touch between lovers, I'm wondering what that barren eclipsed moon, without even the normal touch of sun's light, might indicate for my beauty choices... meanwhile, I'm a painter who's subject is often the moon, take a look if you please at http://www.acryllicpainting.com ... my work has allowed me to appreciate other folks feeling for the moon. Actually, I think my work on human objects is more respectable, but, yes, its the celestial objects that folks nowadays seem to find beauty in... I've thought of our walls of flesh often seperating our beings from one another, and how the passing of those walls may be accomplished by open mouths sharing a single breathe with a kiss, two souls melting as your clouds to a single lumination (comment from someone. I will check you, always. :-) Mark someone sent this, thought you'd like it.
