Poems and Poetry: Dreams must Be allowed To die

Updated on March 24, 2012

Failed Dreams

She’d nourished those dreams

And counted on them more than

Even she’d realized until the night

Her dreams shattered and lay in

Jagged shards at her feet

Tension inside her stomach seemed

To snap, sending vicious jabs of regret

And anger and confusion to every cell

In her body

What was left of the delicious sensation

In her body dissolved like sugar dropped

Into boiling water

She remained calm outward but inside

She was doing a slow painful burning

She took a deep breath, it didn’t help

The burn was getting hotter

Resentment bubbled inside her

With tears over what-might-have-been

That had gotten lost in the mist of what was.
