Poetry Art And Photography- My Saving Grace
Finding Peace In Turmoil
As I have mentioned and written about before, I was diagnosed many years ago with Disassociative Identity Disorder (D.I.D). Back then, when I was first diagnosed it was known as Multiple Personality Disorder (M.P.D.). I have also been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (B.P.D.) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D). Needless to say, my life has been quite the rollercoaster ride as I struggled to find a sense of balance and Normalcy among the turmoil. There has never been a magic pill for me due to the complexity of having D.I.D.. Basically, my journey to finding what would calm the turmoil in my brain fell on me to figure out. Most psychotherapist had no real answers on how to handle my unique situation.
I have always had a passion for writing since the age of 9 when I first discovered the soul bearing poetry of Emily Dickinson. I emersed myself in her world of poetry and in the process, discovered the works of other poets whose words seem to connect with the only world I was able to understand. The works of Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Frost, William Shakespeare, Walt Whitman, John Keats, and so many others became the world that understood me when my own world failed me.
I found a place I felt I belonged within the world of poetry. Writing from my soul and a world that I feared and embraced simutaneously, began my first steps into a long journey of discovery. Art was my visual expression of the world only my mind could see and no words could describe. The two went hand in hand. Both very necessary to describe the tumultuous world I lived in and still do today.
A Photographic Journey
Along with my love of writing and art, I discovered a passion for photography. I have always had a love for nature and the quiet peace that comes with it. I grew up in the harsh streets of New York City. A place that I longed to leave for as long as I could remember. I never embraced any love for the city and as soon I was of age and out of school, I left that city that tortured me throughout my life. I'll share my story another day as to my dramatic exodus from a city that had no love for me.
I began taking pictures of landscapes, trees, flowers, and anything I found beauty in during my 20's. My only equiptment- a 110mm film camera. I never learned how to load the 35mm cameras back then so, I captured beauty using my 110 film. Of course, over the years as technology changed I upgraded from the 110, to the digital point and shoot cameras. Now I use both a small convenient Cannon point and shoot camera and a Nikon DSLR with 3 different lenses to capture the perfect landscape, wildlife, or scenery as I travel.
These three passions- writing, art, and photography has helped me find a peace in me that no pill would ever have accomplished. They have become a large part of who I am and have turned the wild beast of my mental disorders into a more calming turmoil that I can handle. I live on the road, traveling in a van with my common-law husband and a small chihuahua/pug named Wally. The three of us are loving misfits, living the nomadic life and meeting others just like us. As I travel, I am capturing the beauty of this country with my lenses while calming the episodes of turmoil I experience through writing and art. I have rarely ever shared my poetry, but stay tuned as I will begin the next step of getting outside of my comfort zone and sharing the poetry I have written through the years. Some of my poems were expressions from my altars that live in me so the writing forms are very different at times. But, they want to be heard, so perhaps the time has come.
Discover My World
If you are interested in checking out my work, there are several websites that I use. These are the links below. If you are a photographer or an artist, I highly recommend these sites personally. For me, they are easy to use and create a display of your work, and with the exception of Gurushots, the other sites are a way for interested people to purchase your images. I have been a part of Gurushots for a few years now and although it is only a place for photographers to compete for fun prizes, I really love participating in their challenges and it gives me contant inspiration on what kind of photos to take.
PicFair.com is one of the new sites I recently discovered and I am enjoying. I am still taking time to upload more of my photography and art on that site as well as on ArtPal.com. I also have my work on Redbubble where you can actually order merchandise, not just prints with your favorite images. I posted the 3 links below.
