Poetry Challenge

Updated on June 6, 2009

Taking the Challenge

Poetry Challenge

I used to write a lot of poetry, although I haven’t done so in a long time.  Sometimes, for the fun of it, I would pick certain words or have someone else pick the words and challenge one or more other people to write poems using the same words at least once in the poem.  It would be quite interesting to see all the different types of poems we could come up with.  Some times they would be quite comical.  Some times we would put a time limit on them or a number of lines limit.  I’m going to ask my husband now to randomly give me five words.  Let’s see what I can come up with.  By the way, he has no idea why I’m asking him for five random words.  Here goes.

“Table, chair, picture, fast-moving, mask”, were the words he gave me.

Here goes nothing.

Words Given To Me

All that was left

Of a lifetime,

All that was left

Was there.

A picture, a mask and a table

A few photographs and a chair.

I never suspected

It would come to this

I never imagined

It gone

I dreamt we would have

The life that we shared

Would go on.

In this fast-moving world

With it’s vigorous pace

We got swept in the currents

It brought

When we should have

Known better

And could have

Held on

Switched directions

Without even

A thought.

And now it’s

Gone past

Point of

No return

Never to get

It back

With memories

And many

The colors

Of life

Turned to black.

There’s my attempt.  Well, I never said it would be good.  This little lesson has sure taught me that I need to get back into the poetry mode and practice, practice, and more practice.  If at first you don’t succeed…? Try….try…again.

LarVak, We should each try with the same five words...let me know if you're interested (not the ones used here but 5 different ones)

Jess Killmenow - Thanks. Glad you liked it. I'll have to put some more up soon. Do you write poetry?

Well done...on the random "five words" given to you for this poem. That is a gift to be able to expound on a few words and turn them into something worthy of note...Liked this poem, westernangel...

So you two got married and lived happily ever after right? LOL! It was fun reading so many short lines, although I have a very different style. I love the pic at the bottom. Hopefully for you it is near your home.
