Poetry: Valentine’s Day

Updated on July 4, 2012
Source

Poet’s note

Celebration of Valentine's Day as a lover's festival dates from 14th century. Valentine was a priest persecuted by the Roman emperor Claudius II, about 270 AD. Some say he was persecuted because of his persistent belief in love while others believe he was martyred because he was in love with his jailor's daughter. Valentine's Day messages were commercially printed as early as 1700s.

Rumi is the greatest Sufi mystic and poet in the Persian language. He was born in September 30, 1207, Balkh, now in Afghanistan and died in December 17, 1273, Turkey. He has written numerous volumes of love poems.

Muna Madan is a long poem about eternal love, penned by Laksmi Prasad Devkota (1909 – 1959), the Great Poet of Nepal. Muna Madan, the most successful book in Nepal, has been translated into many languages. Devkota has authored at least 6 epics, more than a dozen short epics, hundreds of poems, essays, short stories and a novel.

My unbridled passions

I try to sublimate

Read Rumi

His mysticism and divine love

Blended with poetry

You blossom like a rose

That is red

Source

From the vines of memories

Valentine crawls

Out in the light of life

His persistent belief

In eternal love

Love that knows no bound

Valentine conceives love in his womb

Rumi nurtures the fetus

Source

And Muna is born

Madan is born

You rest your head on my chest

And ask, will you go to Tibet

Earn fortunes

So that we live happily ever after

I see Madan heading to Tibet

All the while remembering his wife

I see Muna, lonely in Kathmandu

Waiting for her husband

Source
Source

These are the stories

Larger than life

That will now culminate into happy ending

I want to assure you

We will rewrite the love story

Of Muna Madan

I will not go to Tibet

Tibet is no more welcoming

Communists are all over

I’ll be with you in Kathmandu

Saving you from Mao tse Tung’s

Nepali children

I will watch the world passing by

Will not let the goon come to you

And tell you a lie that Madan is dead in Tibet

I will not ask God

Why did you destroy your lovely creation

Take my Muna away from me

Rather I will be thankful to Him

For you are with me

Letting me

Smell

Listen

Touch

And taste my love!

      Hi Vinaya

      Beautiful words and breathtaking pictures.

I was not familiar with Devkota.

I read that just before his death in 1959 he made his famous statement, "it would be all right if all my works were burned, except for 'Muna Madan.'"

      Voted up and away.

Vinaya, such a lovely poem from the heart. It takes me to another place and time where only love matters. You have the ability to touch the heart and soul of the reader and that is what makes a poet shine forth. Beautiful, my friend, so beautiful. I bookmarked this poem so I can come back to it often.
