"Poetry" by Eric Wayne Flynn

Updated on March 12, 2014

High end hip hop

Top shelf liquor for the discerning palate

More than just keeping a beat

More than just reppin the streets

Im reppin the universe

Verse by verse

Line by line

Word by word

Rhyme by rhyme

Spitting in the face of reality

Praying something real will come down and battle me

Slap me back to earth

Retro rewind slapped back to birth

So I can do it all again

From an early age

In an early stage of unrest

This is the way it is, has and had to be

Without all the wrong turns and lost highways how could I be destined to be me

I accept my cross and I bear it

Shits getting heavy now as I weight for someone to share it

To bury themselves in the burden

Dealing with a devil like me

Poking his fork at stuff

Checking to see if it's still alive

Hi Dana, thanks for stopping by and commenting, I appreciate it. Truth bothers a lot of people, they don't want to see certain things I guess.

You are so correct Eric: Poetry should be taken seriously because it speaks to the soul. I say that because a lot of my friends would read my poems and get upset with me as if I was speaking to them directly. Of course I wasn't, but because I try to walk in truth, which I feel keeps you healthy mentally, some people cannot. I love the line that says " I accept my cross and bare it Shit is getting heavy as I weight ( and I love the way you spelled "weight" as in heavy or burdened ) for someone to share it. voted up.

Thanks Jodah and Ryem, I definitely feel poetry should be taken seriously, sadly it's not. People are more afraid of their emotions now than I can ever recall in my short life. Fear of being human and imperfect needs to recede.

The passion in this poem hit hard, and every line is better than the one before it. I love your style.

Love this Eric. You describe what poets try to do very well. Your poetry is always challenging and putting yourself and others to the rest, challenging authority and injustice, sometimes trying to provoke, but also showing a tender side. Poetry is so multi-faceted and powerful. It needs to be treated more seriously. Well done.
