We Thought You Were Coming Home (Poetry by GalaxyRat)

Updated on May 30, 2017

GalaxyRat is fond of rats and writing. And dark poetry. She knows that people don't like all these things together... but who cares?

In Honor Of...

In honor of all our veterans (like my father) and in memory of all our fallen. Happy Memorial Day.

We thought you were coming home,

We thought we wouldn't be kneeling over your tombstone,

We thought you'd survive,

And everything would be alright.

But, no, the world has shattered

Under my feet, and it's fallen with a clatter...

Your body on the battleground,

Just regarded as a mound

in the grass by the enemy's troops,

Feels like I'm in a time loop.

You came home that day, father,

We still miss you, father.

We visit your grave every May,

to wish you Happy Memorial Day.

Even though you're fallen and gone,

you will never disappear from among

our family, you were the glue that held us together,

now that glue has become a tether...

We thought you were coming home,

and even though you're not here with us to roam

across rivers, you're in our heart, you're our ladder,

and that's all that matters.

Thanks John! It doesn't matter if they're gone or not... either way, they are in our hearts. Thanks for reading.

Thanks Maryam. I'm writing another one right now, and then I'll probably take a break for a day. I'm also trying out a flash fiction. Thanks for reading!
