Popular but Forbidden: You may not believe that these books were forbidden

It was 1559 when some books become banned for the first time in the history by the publication of Index librorum Prohibitorum (in English- list of forbidden books) under the direction of Pope Paul IV. By this book some books were banned officially because of being heretical, anti-clerical or lascivious. Interestingly among the forbidden books there had been some science books too.

After 1559 several hundred books become forbidden in different countries of the world different times. Some become forbidden because they differ from core religious or political ideology, or contain violent or adult content. There are some books which had been forbidden somewhere sometimes but today we call them classic. In this hub, I will share eight books for the children and teens which had been surprisingly forbidden after their publication.

Harry Potter Series

2001, USA. A group of agitated people came to road and tried to burn some bad books. They demanded that these books are taching magic, violence and ill things. You will be amused to know that these books were of Harry Potter series.

Harry Potter Series is written by J.K. Rowling. It is needless to say about the popularity of this series. J.K. Rowling has successfully created a magical world full of witch, magical creatures and devil.

Children become addicted to this book. Besides, children of this book is more clever than usual children of the same age. These were the main reasons for the objection of teacher and guardian against Harry Potter Series. This is why, like USA in many countries Harry Potter Series was banned.

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

It was the second world war. Hitler was madly trying to win the world. He was invading European countries one after another. On that time a family in Netherlands hid in a house for two years in a row. Among the family members there was a young little girl, and her name was Anne Frank. Anne wrote a dairy for passing time in the hide out.

After the war the dairy got published, and became very popular. But this book was banned in some states of USA for containing anti semitism content, and for having description of devastation caused by the Nazi soldiers which may badly affect soft children mind.

The Adventure of Tom Sawyer written by Mark Twain

Who does not know the name of naughty Tom Sawyer! He is the master of problem making. Sometimes he leaves home late at night with his friend, sometimes he tries to rob. He never fear even to punish his teacher. The character Tom Sawyer is very intelligent too. It can also be said that he is more intelligent than his age. For all these reasons this book of Mark Twain became very popular to the children. And for the same reasons, in the libraries of New York and Colorado The Adventure of Tom Sawyer was forbidden. They said that the character Tom Sawyer is a controversial one. By reading this book the children will learn nothing but disobedience and wicked tricks.

The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

This novel was published in 1884. It also became very popular immediately after publication. In this novel the character Huckleberry Finn was a friend of Tom Sawyer. Huck left his home to get rid of his drunk father. He took his slave Jim with him. His desire was to cross America river-way, and reach Arab where the Black slaves can live with dignity as a free human. For bearing this particular concept of free human, this book was banned in 1885.

The complete fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm

The complete fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm was published in 1800 AD. Still now the fairy tales of Grimm Brothers are very popular all over the world. But it took several edit to convert it to the version we are reading or listening today. In their original fairy tales there had been raw description of bloody events, and many objectionable content. Most of the fairy tales had been tragic too. As a result, it did not take long time to become a tension for the guardian. This book was also forbidden in many countries of the world.

Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe

Uncle Tom's Cabin was published in 1852. Immediately after its publication it became controversial and become forbidden. Because, it was against slavery. It created a very touchy human appeal against slavery. After the publication of this book once Harriet Beecher Stowe, writer of Uncle Tom's Cabin, came by Abraham Lincoln, President of America that time. Indicating the Civil War Abraham Lincoln said to Harriet Beecher Stowe that it was his book for which the Civil War had initiated. Interestingly, the book became forbidden on that time not because of its content but because of its language!

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel by science fiction writer Ray Bradbury published in 1953. People say that Ray Bradbury wrote the book in an underground room of a library without taking any pause in writing.The writer in his novel depicted a society where books become outlawed and firemen burn books if they find any. This book faced criticism too and became banned for the school libraries. Later, the publisher edited and deleted some portion of the book so that the book can avoid criticism and the school children can read the book. But Bradbury demanded to re add the portion that the publisher deleted. The publisher re added that, and the book became banned again. In 1998 this book was forbidden for school children of Michigan.
