If I had had only one day, it would have been enough;

If I had had only one love, it would have been enough;

If I had seen only one smile,

or tasted the fruit of only one tree,

It would have been enough.

If I had sat at only one table with family and friends,

it would have been enough.

If I had looked into my child's eyes just once,

If I had felt the tears of

disappointment,

of sadness,

of heartbreak, just once, it would have been enough;

If I had felt the sweat on my brow

after digging in my garden--just once

If I had felt you move through me just once

Or sat in awe of the sea on a sparkling day,

or of the mountains capped in snow--just once;

But I have had time, and life, and love.

I have watched the sun rise and set.

I have felt the love of early youth

and of steadfast love

and felt those embers burn long.

I have felt the love of scildren

and eaten of your love.

I am thankful.

This is based on the dayenu.

      Oh yes Audrey. Only one time would have been enough. Yet God has given so much. I have lived, loved, seen a million smiles from my child. My beloved has held me as I wept and i have slipped a note into my father's pocket just before they closed the casket. My life has been an incredible gift. Thank You Father God. And thank you Audrey for this beautiful verse.

      Audrey- A lovely and moving poem full of much truth. Halfway through the poem, I heard a faint tune in my mind. And then I recognized it; I was mentally singing "Dayenu" a song my sister-in-law taught my (Christian) family when we would gather at her house to celebrate Passover together some fifteen years ago.

      I paused for a moment puzzled that the song had come flooding into my mind...and then I realized the phrasing and syntax of your poem was similar to the words of the song. Interesting I thought, and kept reading. And there, at the end of the poem was the sentence - "This is based on the Dayenu."

      How amazing our minds and hearts and spirits are. My subconscious recognized the pattern in your poem and pulled up the accompanying music while my conscious mind was enjoying the poem but not yet making the connection.

      Wonderful poem and how marvelous are the minds and spirits that God has given each of us. :)

      Thank you phdast! I am not a particularly religious person, but the Dayenu is a favorite prayer--I guess I really believe in the power of gratitude.
