Prose - Are You An Actor?

Updated on January 22, 2011

Are You Acting?

What if I thought things that would shock you?
What if I wanted to do things you never thought of?
Could I tell you?
What if you thought things that would
shock me?
What if you wanted to do things I never thought of?
Could you tell me?
Will we ever know?
What if we spent our whole life thinking past each other?
What if a smile was really a frown?
What if a frown was really a smile?
Go ahead
Be yourself
I’m not afraid of you
Don’t be afraid of me
Don’t play a part
Play your life
If you are someone else
Then be someone else
I’m ready to be who I am
Can we be different?
Can we still be together?
Don’t say what if
Don’t say I wish
Just be what if
Just be I wish
I’m one inch from your face
Am I making you uncomfortable?
Then do something about it
I just want to know
Are you an actor?
If you want to dream
Then dream
If you want to cry
Then cry
If you want me
Then come get me

      Nellieanna,

There is role playing and there is the fear of being yourself. In this case I am trying to ask the other person if we are ourselves or not? Do we have the courage to be ourselves and possibly risk everything? In time we all come clean because our true nature cannot be suppressed for long.

Yes - both children and adults enjoy make-believe and it can be fun and add spice to various parts of life. There is a difference, though, in that and seriously trying to BE what one is not and/or to convince others one is. The results can be more grim if the pretender does believe the pretense or if others do. Children can enjoy "play-like" but need to understand the difference as well.

Thank you acaetnna... maybe this kind of encouragement can spice up a relationship... hopefully it doesn't open up a can of worms...

      Nellieanna,

Thank you... acting makes people feel better. Children play pretend and so do adults. Some people don't like who they are. That's a shame...

WONDERFUL! Pure, real, unmasked is the poem and hopefully the genuineness & authenticity it may inspire! At the very least, it may peel off a layer or two of "act'.

Those "what ifs" are the real keys to what IS.

Christopher - Like Aware I have to thank you for consistently reading my new material. We do act quite a bit: at work; in front of our children; maybe around our parents... but there's got to be at least one person in our life that thrives on who we really are.... Is that too much to ask?

Aware - Once again I thank you for taking the time to read and comment.

Yeah it's hard to be who you really are. Maybe some of our thoughts need to be suppressed but I think relationships suffer because the couple can't or won't be honest about what they want. Not in a complaining or selfish sort of way but in a "let's live" sort of way.

Shakespeare said " We are all but actors on a stage..."

      He was right.

The secret is...we can choose to "act" like ourselves. No filters.

Trick is...first, we have to know ourselves.

      This is a fine poem.

I think that parts are played for the actors sake . Not so much a attempt to hide from others . but to hide from oneself. i think most people want to appear like the person they could be. the person they should be the person they wish they were. thought provoking poem

      good job

Thak you Petra... in my view it is our insecurities that hold us back... children are dominated by peer pressure and as we grow we have to peel back the layers that we applied in our pursuit of popularity.

"don't be - I wish - just be yourself", that is great Mark and would be even greater IF more people could understand and follow the simple concept

I normally hop right on over the poems, but this one simply grabbed me. Love it.
