Prose - I Saw Myself Through Your Eyes

Updated on October 11, 2011

In a dream
I see myself
As you see me
When I awaken
And lose all sanity
As I always do
I ask you
To tell me
What I am about
But I only hear you
When my eyes are closed
Will it ever matter?

In your pain
While I ignore you
You see so clearly
As I sleep
I feel
Finally
What you feel
And it hurts
In my sorrow
I beg for the dream
To stop being so unkind
Will it ever end?

In the same game
I remain as I am
Like yesterday
I walk in the crowd
And remember
Clearly
How you came to me
In the night
And became the dream
That lifted the veil
Revealing what I already knew
Will I ever change?

Beautifully written, I would like to see your book of poetry. You seem to be able to write poetry like writing a sentence.

Very well written, its wonderful when we can see ourselves and realize that our actions really do matter and have an effect on others lives. When we take responsibility for them, hopefully its not too late.

@Erin - thank you. It's very difficult to confront the self that others see. We don't want to admit our shortcomings or how we hurt another. Sometimes you have to float into another person's mind to see what you need to see...

@Dee - thank you again... I try to say things in a way that makes a person pause... maybe I'm really just doing it so I get it because I need to get it...

@Freya - thank you for saying such nice things. NO! I'm not sensitive! I'm a rough tough cowboy!!! Ok... maybe a little sensitive..... :)

I am "working" a 12 step program and beginning to embrace the fourth step, doing a moral inventory which is not so much about judgment as it is about honesty and ownership and as I read outloud the verses it gives me a picture of what I am about to do for myself, seeing myself as I really am.

@Vern - It's very gratifying to me personally that you take the time to read my stuff aloud and actually take it to heart. It is a simple message but difficult to execute for some reason. We have our self-image as contrasted to our true selves. I hope whatever you do will work in your life.... thank you...

It doesn't take much to see a true reflection of ourselves ... then we realise how our actions can affect others. Your words are beautiful and what a wonderful choice of picture to accompany your poem. Awesome.

@acaetnna - thank you... speaking for myself I know I don't view how my actions affect others near enough... sometimes that wall of selfishness makes you blind... when I found that picture I thought "now those are some eyes!"

@starflakes - thank you... I get into such a zone when I write then later when prompted by a comment such as yours I reread it and wonder "where did that come from?"

As I reread it again I am reminded that the full impact is felt if each line is read somewhat slowly with a pause at the end because each line is intended to stand on it's own even though they set up each subsequent line...

@April - thank you for the kind remark and I'm sorry to hear about your husband's passing. I hope the dreams are comforting to you... we have an alternative life when we go to bed it seems.... sometimes it's good; sometimes it's bad.... I hope things pick up for you.
