Prose - It's Time to be You

Updated on November 1, 2010

It's Time To Be You

Guilt, sorrow or obligation are not love or compatibility
A soul mate isn't just nice or there just to make you happy
These things cannot force the issue of where your true self lies
It is wrong to take the gifts of another under false pretenses
The sooner this is realized the better off all you will be
True understanding of yourself will open the door to your life
Once you can begin to live alone, then you can begin to share your life
The decision to share your life must be made from a position of strength
The decisions of a confused mind can cause endless turmoil
Know who you are so you can know what you can give
Learn to make your decisions based upon your true self
Shed the desires that others have of your life
Their wishes come from their own weaknesses, not your strength
Remember the things you've always wanted and take them to heart
That is who you are
Find that person
It's you...

Thank you QM.... many of us try to be what we are not and postpone the day of reckoning because we place importance on companionship over contentment...

You have succeeded to describe with few words, what I would have needed infinetely many words,(or more) to explain! And you are so right, a healthy relationship is created by people who know their value and respect others! Voted up and awesome!

Thank you E... I especially believe this is something that many women I know need to understand. The fear of living alone seems to trump all else...

Thank you Thoughtforce.... sometimes I ramble and somtimes I don't... I think the less words the better... when we find the essence of our message we can then strip away all else...

      OH, Grate Hub Suburban Poet!

It is true that people forgetting to be them selves and they seems to busy and weak for it too. I personally believe it is difficult to be them selves when they don't know who really they are... And shame many of them don't make time to understand them selves!

Once you can begin to live alone, then you can begin to share your life...

This is so true... And I am glad I stop by to read your poem, and I will continue this!

      Cheers to you Suburban Poet

Thank you Nayothara... it should be a matter of free choice in life... you shouldn't remain with an abuser or someone who props you up because you come from a position of weakness. It is not a matter of personal arrogance but a matter of personal dignity... then you can exist with or without... because you are always your own companion....

Thank you NikiiLee.... it seems too many people try to be what someone else wants them to be... that's a mistake... I'm not talking about right and wrong or ethics or whatever... I'm talking about WHO you are and how that impacts your decisions in life...

You have a talent for poetry, and touch on things that are so true. So many people find it hard to be themselves because they go through life doing whatever it is that other people want them to be, and when they look back on their lives, they wish they had been more true to themselves.

      Thank you pastella,

It's somewhat easy to way these things to someone but self-esteem and self-confidence apparently are elusive. I have been blessed with a stable upbringing and I am very happy with who I am. I have many issues such as selfishness but I'm am going to be myself. I think it's a tough thing to articulate but this does not mean you are going to be stubborn, arrogant, unrepentant, mean, rude etc... it just means you don't have to accept less in life or endure abuse. It means stand up and be confident that you are worthy.

Suburban Poet, first of all, I like, like your hub ID!

Suburban Poet, Suburban Poet, Suburban Poet!

See, I can't get it out of my head!

I think I'll by myself instead!

Suburban Poet has reminded me again,

without beholding true self, life never begins!

@Fossillady - thank you! I live in a Suburb and I thought of my yuppie-type image and how it might clash with the idea of a bohemian poet so I merged the two in order to acknowledge the duality in my life... I'm trying to shave the yuppie part out....
