Prose - Lament

Updated on August 8, 2011

A man doesn’t cry
Instead his tears
Bleed on the inside
Drowning his fears
Flooding his soul
Cresting above his heart
Rendering it silent
As it lives apart
From love
Preferring pride
Over companionship
Riding the tide
Of stubbornness
Yet again
Living through the pain
Of another end
Refusing the hand
Of compromise
The only answer
To his constant sighs
Of wonder
Not knowing
Why she left
Her tears flowing
Empting her soul
Her heart rising
Above the waters
With no disguising
Her love
Rejecting pride
Longing for something
That soon died
Along the banks
Littered with broken dreams
Taking its place
As rivers become streams
Slowing to a trickle
As the stone refuses to relent
Her heart dried up
Unable to hear the ocean's lament

If boys/men weren't supposed to cry, they wouldn't have tears to do so. They say crying releases stress chemicals in the tears. I hope so, as I cry alone many times. A man should never feel less than a man if he cries alone sometimes too. It's only human.

@Binaya.Ghimire - I am very humbled that you comment on my work as I respect your interpretations of life very much. I think this hit me finally as we all know that men are emotional creatures too but it manifests itself in different ways... I guess I thought of outward crying by women and inward crying by men... it's the opposite, yin-yang, equilibrium that is achieve in emotional expression but in the end we both suffer in our own way. I grew up with a macho father (from Cuba) and yes it was taught that men don't cry. I agree with it to a certain extent because you need to be tough in life and not fall apart when things are difficult. But everyone reaches a point of pain that privately is felt... and for us men we swallow it but we know it does not disappear... instead we drown on the inside and suffer stoicly...

A man doesn’t cry, I have been told this since I was a child. The saying is very common in Nepal and feminist believe this is derogatory statement against women.(A man doesn’t cry means women cry all the time as crying is a symptom of weakness). However, your interpretation is wonderful, now I can say what it means for a man not to cry.

@QudsiaP1 - It's hard to write about happy stuff all the time... In fact it's kind of boring for me but I'm glad for others who have happiness. So this is what you get from me... thank you for commenting...

Had there been nothing to lament about, there would be very few poets. :P
