Prose - Making Rhymes

Updated on November 15, 2010

Making Rhymes

You say you cannot write a sonnet
Your imagination has a lock upon it
It is not a matter of how to impress
What is important is to express
Wit, warmth, confusion, whatever
Just get your thoughts together
Come up with a few lines
Making sure everything rhymes
And suddenly you become a poet
With a need to always show it
A verse here, a line there
The ability is not all that rare
It's just a desire to think a different way
Not letting dullness have it's sway
Casting aside ordinary thought
Ignoring the things you've been taught
It all comes down to desire
To elevate your style ever higher
Some may call it pretentious
They are just not adventurous
A love of communication
Will create new revelation
It invites others to live as you
Creating a world that is new
For all to rise above the correctness
Of corporate speak that is soulless
Never being the same as others
Yet living in common with new brothers
Working each day for our daily bread
But not to dull the thoughts in our head
Living life larger than it seems
Can bring us all closer to our dreams

Still working! Ha... my boss knows I write poems. He's a musician and we work tried to put some music to some lyrics that I've not posted yet (he plays guitar and I play the piano)... plus I put in megahours so it's all good. Thanks for asking!

Doug... that's right... in fact I have a short that I need to post about the challenge of being a poet... it's tough because music is so compelling that weak lyrics can be masked by an awesome singer or guitar player. A poet stands alone...

Totally agreed, poet. Songs are essentially poems, and poems are given a bad rap in the modern world. It's sort of frustrating. Poets were at one time considered important -- hell, even macho and warlike. Now, if you're into poetry, you're a softy. Well, let's keep doing what we do and the hell with the naysayers.

Doug... thanks for commenting. Yeah some of my more macho friends are scratching their heads over my late in life conversion to poetry. One guy who I played sports with said: "Poetry? I want to give you shit but I have to admit they are good!" It's strange because everyone has their favorite song and you see people of all types singing at bars and in cars; yet they don't think that at the root of it all is a poem!

"Some may call it pretentious/they are just not adventureous" -- that probably sums up an issue every poet has to face as they embrace the craft. Why is there such hostility towards poetry, I wonder. It's fun stuff, as you illustrate here.

Hi The Suburban Poet, I really enjoyed this poem and the rhyming is very good. Sometimes people have words that rhyme for just that one reason, but it's always a lot better when it's like this when they rhyme and make sense.

      Cheers. Michael.
