Depression is the leading cause of disability globally, and is a major factor related to the worldwide burden of disease. We are all likely familiar with feelings of depression. Depression is characterized by feeling down in the dumps, blue, sad, hopeless and sometimes helpless. It affects our thoughts, feelings and behavior and has a number of physical symptoms as well.

Bipolar disorder is defined by the same symptoms as depression at times but also includes times when the person feels extremely “up,” elated or euphoric and excessively energized. These are manic or hypomanic episodes. Switching from depressive episode to a manic episode or vice versa occurs in different patterns for different people but both types of episodes are generally distressing. The depressive episode causes suffering while it is going on, the manic episode causes suffering after the episode has passed and the person is coping with the repercussions.

While it is likely all of us have some experience with the feeling of being depressed and times when we may feel elated or euphoric, for some these feelings are chronic. Celebrities are no exception. Some have limited experience with these feelings while others suffer from more severe forms of the disorders. The quotes made by many of these famous people can help all of us when we our life may feel out of control.

"I think scars are like battle wounds - beautiful, in a way. They show what you've been through and how strong you are for coming out of it."

"Never be ashamed of what you feel. You have the right to feel any emotion that you want, and to do what makes you happy. That's my life motto."

"I don't let anyone's insecurities, emotions, or opinions bother me. I know that if I am happy, that's all that matters to me."

"I learned that you go through things, you deal with them and that's what empowers you and ultimately makes you a happy person."

"Recovery is something that you have to work on every single day and it's something that it doesn't get a day off."

"Hold on to that fundamental quality of faith. Have faith that on the other side of your pain is something good."

“I like to use the hard times in the past, to motivate me today”

"We all go thru the sludge and depression never discriminates. Took me a long time to realize it but the key is to not be afraid to open up. Especially us dudes have a tendency to keep it in. You’re not alone."

“I believe that curiosity, wonder, and passion are defining qualities of imaginative minds and great teachers, that restlessness and discontent are vital things; and that intense experience and suffering instruct us in ways that less intense emotions can never do. It is important to value intellect and discipline, of course, but it is also important to recognize the power of irrationality, enthusiasm, and vast energy.”

“Love has, at its best, made the inherent sadness of life bearable, and its beauty manifest.”

“We all build internal sea walls to keep at bay the sadnesses of life and the often overwhelming forces within our minds. In whatever way we do this--through love, work, family, faith, friends, denial, alcohol, drugs, or medication, we build these walls, stone by stone, over a lifetime. ”

“With time, one has encountered many of the monsters, and one is increasingly less terrified of those still to be met.”

“You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.”

“You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity.”

"The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive."

“We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.”

"I always want to stay focused on who I am, even as I'm discovering who I am."

"There's too much darkness in the world. Everywhere you turn, someone is tryin' to tear someone down in some way; everywhere you go, there's a feeling of inadequacy, or a feeling that you're not good enough. I want to bring a certain light to the world."

"I believe in the limitlessness of humans. We're capable of incredible things. At times, that realization is frightening."

“If you cry because the sun has gone out of your life, your tears will prevent you from seeing the stars.”

“Everything comes to us that belongs to us if we create the capacity to receive it.”

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.”

“I have become my own version of an optimist. If I can't make it through one door, I'll go through another door - or I'll make a door. Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present.”

“From Joy all things have their origin; in Joy they subsist, and unto Joy they return.”

"A smile and a laugh are the duct tape of life. They can fix anything."

"I’m nearing the end of the road and still learning."

"There's nothing, repeat, nothing to be ashamed of when you're going through a depression. If you get help, the chances of your licking it are really good. But, you have to get yourself onto a safe path."

“Stay afraid, but do it anyway. What’s important is the action. You don’t have to wait to be confident. Just do it and eventually the confidence will follow.”

“I don’t hate hardly ever, and when I love, I love for miles and miles. A love so big it should either be outlawed or it should have a capital and its own currency.”

“No motive is pure. No one is good or bad-but a hearty mix of both. And sometimes life actually gives to you by taking away.”

“We have been given a challenging illness, and there is no other option than to meet those challenges. Think of it as an opportunity to be heroic—not ‘I survived living in Mosul during an attack’ heroic, but an emotional survival. An opportunity to be a good example to others who might share our disorder.”

"I want to help show my people how beautiful they are. I want to hold up the mirror to my audience that says this is the way people can be, this is how open people can be."

“To be who you are and become what you are capable of is the only goal worth living.”

"One of the processes of your life is to constantly break down that inferiority, to constantly reaffirm that I Am Somebody."

"Depression doesn't take away your talents—it just makes them harder to find. But I always find it. I learned that my sadness never destroyed what was great about me. You just have to go back to that greatness, find that one little light that's left."

"No matter how much success you have, no matter how many opportunities, fame, fortune, no matter how many accept you to your face, the person that really needs to accept you is you."

"I’ve come a long way through a lot of heartache and pain, but none of it made me damaged goods. It made me a fighter."

"I feel like if you're a really good human being, you can try to find something beautiful in every single person, no matter what."

“You can’t put a limit on anything. The more your dream, the farther you get.”

“I think goals should never be easy, they should force you to work, even if they are uncomfortable at the time.”

"I want to be able to look back and say, 'I've done everything I can, and I was successful.' I don't want to look back and say I should have done this or that. I'd like to change things for the younger generation of swimmers coming along."

Yes, there has been greater awareness about depression and bipolar disorder as well as other mental illnesses in recent years. I wasn't aware that the younger generation of the royal family was affecting peoples knowledge and understanding of mental disorders. Thanks for the information. I'll be looking into the Duke of Sussex and what he's had to say.

Glad you enjoyed the quotes. Bill. Unfortunately, medication doesn't work for everyone, but for many it definitely can help them get their lives back on track.

Pamela - you are certainly lucky to never have experience serious depression. It is definitely a serious condition. But you are right fame and money aren't a recipe for happiness. Thanks for reading and for commenting.

It has been helpful in recent years that mental illness, depression and bi-polar disorders are being talked about so much more. In the UK, we owe a lot of this openness to the younger generation of the royal family. The Duke of Sussex especially has been very open about his own struggles after his mother's untimely death. Celebrities have also been very open.

All really good quotes. Carrie Fisher's about confidence is among my favorite. Quite an original article.

This is a fascinating article about depression. It sure states fame and money are not a recipe for happiness. I am fortunate that I never fall into a true depression. I have a bad day now and then, but spirituality, family, music and nature all make me smile. I know people who struggle though and have great compassion for them.
