Red On A Rose

Updated on August 3, 2012

This poem was written by my daughter, Katie, as a gift to me a few years ago. It is used with permission, of course.

A woman so nice

A person that shines like a diamond

As beautiful as red on a rose

A smile as bright as the stars

Hands of velvet

A voice so soft

She is a person as beautiful

As red on a rose

A heart that's brave

And a will so strong

With eyes full of life

A beautiful soul, like

Red on a rose

A woman as loved

As much as she is

Just as beautiful

As anyone can be

And sweet as the smell

Of a red, red rose

Katie, March 2007

Tomorrow is the 5 year anniversary of my Grandma's death. Her name was Rose. I was thinking of writing something as tribute to her, but when I read this, I found this did the job. Beautiful poem. Thanks for sharing!

How lovely that you received the gift of a poem from your daughter! I loved reading this poem, which has an elegant simplicity -- just like a rose. :)

Thank you dear friend, for a wonderful comment. Yes, we do have similar styles and I think a lot of that comes from helping her with writing during her school years. She's really good, passed her first college english class with a 95... she made a 99 on one paper because she had ONE comma out of place!!

      Thank you again.

      Hope you are well

      Hi Linda,

What a wonderful tribute to receive from a daughter:) No one knows you better than she would, so you must truly be an amazing person. I love the recurrence of the last phrase, red on a rose. In the first few paragraphs, the last phrase becomes predictable. But the last paragraph ends with the fragrance of the rose, linking a clear commonality between yourself and the rose, such a lovely way to end this poem. I also like the way your daughter varies the recurrence, then in the end says, red, red rose. Recurrence is so much better than repetition, because it conveys the same thought with variance. You both have similar writing styles. Your daughter loves you very, very much!

Thank you Josh. Yes it was an awesome gift. She wrote this during the time her dad and I were divorcing. The divorce was my choice so she stayed with her dad because he was hurting. I was feeling a bit shunned, to say the least, but this gift showed me she didn't hate me, she was simply helping her dad.

      Thank again.
