Remember the Lord Your God (Poem)

Updated on September 3, 2015

What to remember?

When we read and interpret scripture the key is to start with who God is; that we may end up with a greater knowledge, a deeper devotion and higher praises for Him. We ought to remember and understand that God acts according to His attributes, and that He cannot violate any of it. So if we start with what He did or with any other starting point then we can easily be deceived and end up with a misconstrued understanding of scriptures.

The infinite gap between man and God is what makes it difficult to study the scriptures. And we cannot expect to understand God in His fullness and all that He is. That’s why God in His grace, uses human language and then sends the Holy Spirit as our teacher to make us understand what we need to understand. Now as God reveals and teaches us all that is to know about Him, we are to remember every bit of it.

How? The scripture warns us how easily we forget and how easy it is for us to go after idolatrous (sinful) desires. In simpler terms, to disobey is to forget, to forget is to disobey. As to remember is to obey and vice versa.

Why with all the do’s and don’ts? Simple. It’s for us to grow in Godliness and holiness. Living as sinners our whole entire life will definitely leave stubborn habits/desires to deal with, right? We are instantly saved and made new solely by the work of Christ but we are then called to observe total responsibility and total dependence (Phil 2:12-13/John 15:5) as God finishes His work in us. (Made holy to live holy-1 Thessalonians 4:7/1 Peter 1:15-16) It’s going to take our entire lifetime, but as God was with the Israelites as they journeyed through the wilderness, so is He with us. Before and after being delivered from slavery, through the wilderness and up until we reach the Promised Land (to be with Him forever), God is with us. Soli Deo Gloria!

Remember (poem)

We ought to remember

As a believer of Christ

As a recipient of His perfect sacrifice

We ought to remember

All that God did from the beginning of time

From the universe’s birth, reflecting His majesty sublime

From Adam and Eve’s demise because of their crime

To Abraham’s faith when Isaac he was willing to sacrifice

We ought to remember

All God’s promises and that not one of them will fail

And that no enemy shall ever prevail

We ought to remember

Who we are now in Christ

And nothing apart from Him shall suffice

A working progress, which we are

To continue in Him, we must not lose heart

We ought to remember

Above all, who God is, and to know Him more

His glory, holiness, mercy, love and grace,

We ought to wholeheartedly adore

We ought to always remember and never forget.

Holding on to it ‘til we reach heaven’s shore
