Remembering the Way it Was

Updated on May 27, 2017

"Take off his helmet, pack", the master sargeant said,

"This boy's going home, even though his body's dead".

"Remember him for his courage, how much it meant",

"When we pin his name tag, having his remains sent".

Refrain:

Going home one last time, My body is at rest,

Tell my momma and my poppa, I did my best.

Send my medals to my sweetheart, Jennie Sue,

Tell all my folks down in Texas, I'll miss them, too.

"I remember him", said one soldier over there,

"We used to jump from tree limbs on a dare".

"Everyday he'd work at the mill so very hard",

'When we were kids shot marbles in the yard."

Refrain:

Going home one last time, my body is at rest,

Tell my momma and my poppa I did my best.

Send my medals to my sweetheart, Jennie Sue,

Tell all my folks down in Texas, I'll miss them, too.

We put his body on a train, didn't have time to explain,

He then was carried to his rest stop, with time to spare.

His grave marker was real plain, his body does remain,

A name and date etched on the granite, ours to share.

Refrain:

Going home one last time, my body is at rest,

Tell my momma and my poppa I did my best.

Send my medals to my sweetheart, Jennie Sue,

Tell all my folks down in Texas, I'll miss them, too.

Folks don't understand, our lives once had a plan,

We each wanted what others did, a life as grand.

Now we just lie in graves, to the soil we are slaves,

No longer, the satisfaction, provided by our hands.

Refrain:

Going home one last time, my body is at rest,

Tell my momma and my poppa I did my best.

Send my medals to my sweetheart, JennieSue,

Tell my folks down in Texas I'll miss them, too.

May our God bless all the men and women who have served and given their all.
May our God bless all the men and women who have served and given their all.

A sad poem but it tells the truth about an army's life.
