What Is Respect?

Updated on June 28, 2012
Source

Inspiration

Due to some experiences that have recently occurred in my life, I feel it relevant to share with all of my friends the vitality of showing respect to those whom we encounter in our everyday lives. Respect is not easy, but instead rather difficult; In the end however, if you choose to show it, blessings will blossom and all will have been worth it.

Do You Have It?

Many people claim to have it

Some even fake it well.

But when the mask is revealed

It sure ain't hard to tell.

Why is it so fleeting

This virtue we have here.

Maybe no one wants to work

Through sweat, toil, and tear.

Because you see, this virtue

Seldom have a firm grip.

If even a grip at all they have

Oftentimes, it will slip.

Respect must be earned is why

Doesn't happen overnight.

Most who claim to have it don't

Don't have what it takes-the might.

So let's look into this virtue

And see if we pass the test.

Do we really have respect

Or are we just like the rest.

Don't let your words out of your reach!
Don't let your words out of your reach! | Source

What Does It Look Like?

Showing esteem for one another

Although they may be different.

Aren't we all in this together

Or am I wrong-my friend?

Thinking of someone's feelings

Before you say those words.

Learning to hold your tongue

Or else they fly like birds.

Learning to say whats needed

But in a gentle tone.

There's no need to be a jerk

You'll reap what you have sown.

Honoring one another

By what we say and do.

Tis kind of like the golden rule,

It will come back to you.

      Brilliant poetry Josh... awesome...

Real Respect can only be earned by the hard work you put in...

the quantity and quality of the respect you earn is directly proportional to the quantity and quality of your efforts....

      Brilliant poem

I disagree. Earning respect does not take a lot of effort if you're naturally a caring person. It take effort if you're ugly to the Mankind and animals!

Very nice poem, Fairy Godson! You've come a long way in a very short while. This poem comes from your heart, I can tell. It reads smoothly and the point is driven with each word. No frolic, no games, just the truth.

I'm pleased to see your growth. We all have a lot to learn in our literary path and the path of life. There's a tremendous amount of help, belief and faith in this community. You're living proof! Look how many people have taken you under their wing because of the promise we see.

You've spent much of your young life helping hold others up and be strong. We see that and respect that. Now, it's your turn my young friend. Be appreciative that it's been discovered while you have many years to perfect your talent and strive for your dream. For many of us, it has come late in life and we (I) find ourselves scrambling to reach our dreams.

You belong in the arena of helping others, as you have determined yourself to be a youth counselor. Your writings will serve twofold: you will also touch and counsel those of us who have already made mistakes and are striving for a good, respectful way of life.

You, my Fairy Godson, have earned my respect. Maybe you no longer need a Fairy Godmother?

P.S. If you don't mind my asking, what happened earlier today? Email me if you'd rather not share with all...

      LOL,

      Shauna aka Fairy Godmother

      josh3418,

Respect in adults sometimes has to be earned. I am sure we have all encountered adults who lack respect for others. It is something that should be taught to everyone at an early age. And when it is not I do not mind telling the person of their lack of respect to others.

I loved this hub you did a great job.

Josh, this is great and timely. I am sure most of us have seen the 68 year old woman who was a bus monitor on a middle school bus being bullied. IT was horrible. Respect others and respect your elders. Sorry if this went a bit off topic, but when I read your poem, I thought of her and what she went through.

Josh - This is a wonderful representation of what is really imortant in life. To pen such a wonderful, important write is worthy is well.

I remember reading those words "here's my first attempt at a poem" and look at all you've woven since then. You have an artistic eye for not only outting the words together beautifully, the subjects you write about are so meaningful.

      Glad you are here.

Josh: Thank you for this reminder. Respect is something earned, not something simply doled out. It is simple to like someone, but to have respect for someone is not so simple.

One other thing, "Fear" does not equal "Respect"

Hi Josh, This is an awesome reminder to respect each other. In my opinion it doesn't matter if someone is a few days old or 100 years old... everyone, everywhere should be respected. Respect their space, their self, their belongings. If not I believe the karma bus will pay the violators a visit. FYI...Aretha Franklin's RESPECT song is now stuck in my head ;)

I remember being a very young person. I was taught to respect my elders. When you are an emerging adult it can be a difficult task to do this when elders are not respectful or worthy of it in return. There is a need to find a balance there as personalities and mannerisms are cemented. Great poem with deep implications. Sharing!

It does seem to be fleeting and can be shown in one instance and destroyed in another. Those who don't show it don't get it in return and yet like you say, all it takes is "Thinking of someone's feelings, Before you say those words".

Beautiful poetry, love your words, my votes and best wishes to you and sharing.
