Review of Green Lantern Larfleeze Christmas Special

Updated on January 24, 2011

What is this?

This is a Review of the Green Lantern Larfleeze (Agent Orange) Christmas Special that I wrote on Jan 19 2011 though planed to write it the day of Christmas but lack of computer and such caused my writing of it to be delayed...... Warning this contains pictures of tasty cookies I made and other epic things.

My copy of the comic (see below for review of cover)

Now this is an epic cover, Fire, guns and tons of stuff yet it doesn't distrack that much from the main character.... (but still maybe just a little too much stuff)

This issue had a cover price of 3.99

15 pages of real main story

1 Cookie Recipe

1 puzzle

1 cut out christmas tree ornimet

and finally a cute 2 page story.

I will review this looking over the Cookie Recipe first, Then the other stuff, and then finally the story itself.

Cookie with Tang drawn Symbol

Cookie with knife Carved Symbol

this almost was harder then trying to use the tang... but unlike the Tang this only took 1 try instead of 3 to make it look good

The Cookie Recipe

First off here is the full Recipe. (I am giving you this because they are good cookies yet I have advice on how to slightly improve the recipe) (psst my advice is in [ ] 's thingys)

1/2 cup Butter softened [ if you mic it because you are too lazy to let it soften due to exposure of sitting there be careful butter explodes in a microwave when in over 30-40 consecutive seconds.... so only nuke it for 10-15 second periods at a time]

1/2 cup Sugar

1/2 cup brown Sugar [both granulated]

2 Tablespoons of Orange Juice Concentrate thawed [make sure it really is thoroughly thawed]

1 Table spoon Orange Zest [Orange Peel granules work too]

1 Egg

2 teaspoons vanilla

1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

a dash of salt [ can use half a dash if you are on a low sodium diet]

1/2 cup white chocolate chunks

Now I am just summing up the recipe but I do advice you buy the comic.... it explains things in a more funny way.... and if you cant understand it in the comic... well follow along with my verson of explaining things.... but if you do just that you are missing out on some funny stuff.

1-preheat oven to 350

2- In small bowl mix flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda.

3- In larger bowl mix everything else that was in ingredient list (except white chocolate chucks) until it looks yummy.

4- mix the small bowl of white stuff into larger bowl of tasty stuff. Mix until smooth.

5-Add in white chocolate chunks

6- Roll dough into small balls in your hands and place about 24 of them onto a greased pan (or a piece of tin foil that you put on a pan and greased) [also the recipe in the book didnt say to roll them into perfect spheres in your hand before placing them.... but do it because if you dont they come out all lumpy and look ugly and are hard to frost.... thankfully my oven is small and I had to bake them in 2 groups of 12 so only half of mine were ugly....]

7- let cook for 12-14 min or until golden... while cookies cool make the EPIC ORANGE FLAVORED FROSTING

thats right there is even a frosting recipe.... but i will not give it to you.... not because I am mean or because it is no longer the chirstmas time of giving... but because I want you peoples to buy the issue..... even though it came out over a month ago...... lols (trust me despite my later criticisms of this thing I will write down below buy the thing)

Ok now one other thing to add... in the comic all the cookies Agent Orange made his had his symbol on it..... well the frosting in the comic well there is only one kind and it is light light light orange..... so to make the symbols on it (because i was too lazy to go buy white frosting to draw them on top of the orange frosting) i first tried to use Orange astronaut Tang I had laying around..... this was a pain to try to do...... as you can see from my picture above..... so i tried to just carve the symbol in using a knife when the frosting hardened... as you can see below... that worked better but either way the tang on it (even if the symbol looked ugly) tasted pretty good... but I do advice you just buy white frosting in a spray can and do it that way.....

Most epic thing I have seen EVER (yes my life is sad)

Review of Story and other stuff

Sadly for it being 3.99 in price I do not think the story is long enough..... but it was a very cute and fun story.

Now with such a hard story it is very very very hard to try to sum up the plot of it with out giving away very much but I will try.

Basically it is Christmas morning and Larfleeze wakes up to find santa never came this leads him into a pissed off fury to find the man in the red suit (leading to the epic picture to the side of him in a fiery Reindeer construct).

How as I listed in this book it has a cookie recipe, a puzzle, and a cut out Christmas ornament, one thing this book did well was blending those things in as part of the story.

For example when AO finds out Santa can be found at the north pole they inserted the maze in the shape of his symbol to show how he found is way there. I both liked his yet hated it. I liked it because even though the puzzle was so simple and had 2 solutions it was cute and fun but what I hated was around it they showed epic funny pictures of his crazy journey to get to the north pole some of which I wanted to know more about. This made the puzzle seem almost like lazy writing and almost thrown together to easily.

Also with the Christmas ornament, unlike the puzzle and cookie recipe which were crafted in as part of the storyline (even if seemingly done due to a lazy writer) the ornament was put it almost out of place in-between 2 advertisements causing me upon first reading to mistake it as an advertisement. Despite this the ornament is kinda cool looking and such but it could have been made a bit better and when you make it photo copy it using a very strong paper.... or buy two issues and actually cut it out.... but that destroys a comic.... so the choice is up to you.

The most redeeming part of the story is the ending. Though most of the story was very funny and almost seemed like a huge joke the story came together for an almost sad and heart touching ending. Did it fully redeem the bits of the story that had lazy writing or seemed to be sloppily put in..... No.... not at all..... but it just about equalizes it. I wont tell you what the ending is but to understand it I advise you read the "New Guardians" story arc in the Green Lantern comic to fully understand its impact on the character of AO. (SPOILER Hint it has to do with Larfleeze's sad unknown past).

In conclusion over all the comic is worth a buy if you can still find it. I say this for 3 reasons:

1- it was funny

2- The cookies are epiclly good if you have the will to actualy make them

3- this story's ending seems to hold a good impact on Larfleeze character development

Well that is that and I hope you enjoyed this review. I got more cookies to go eat ^_^

So just wondering.....

What do you think is the coolest part of this comic
