Ridicule, A poem

Updated on February 24, 2013
always exploring profile image

I am a writer of poetry and fiction. I especially love flash fiction. My name is Ruby, and I live in Southern Illinois. I am a retired R.N.

Not everyone supports poetry, That is your choice.

I found it questionable when poetry is ridiculed since it evolves from the master poet's heart

incomprehensibly deaf and blind to beauty lovingly penned as non-prose art

Magical words erupt and pleads to pen and quill, "rhyme me master, open hearts let my muse be revealed"

Occasionally my muse lies in wait, lonely, hidden, preferring to remain concealed

The poet's muse beseeching quill to please write of heartache, happiness, but preferably deeply imbedded pain

Tis best if reader never encountered sorrow, Tis best to refrain

From judgemental comments spoken on forum abound

' Tis why you seldom see poets hanging ' round

Poets also love to write about their lovable furry friends

They come a- running when we grab the camera and say, "smile" We ' gonna get a big ole happy grin

*****************************************************************************************************

So may i suggest if poetry fails to ring your bell

Don't knock us, Your recipes will still do well.

It is those who knows not the value of poetry that will mock it. Poetry is not for everyone.

I am new here, just started a couple weeks ago and just published my first hub page poem today. I love poem, everyone has their own way they write and I don't think anyone should be shamed because of it. I have to say though what I love most about this is how everyone came together in the comments :-) it gives a real sense of community :-) Have a blessed day

Hello Kathryn. First let me say that i am happy you've read so many of my hubs today. Thank you. I feel the same about reading any piece, whether it be poetry or whatever, if i don't like it, i don't comment. I used to comment on political hubs when hubbers would put down our President, i soon learned when i got mad enough to comment, it only hurt me and they enjoyed it. Thank you again. Best Wishes....

I don't like it when people ridicule a poem. It is like insulting someone for what their deepest, most personal thoughts are. Anyone who doesn't like a piece can just move on. They don't need to insult it.

Another great one, and I love this song! It reminds me of when I was in 6th grade, and I stayed in a classroom while my friend was in a singing group, practicing this song over and over again.

      Have a wonderful day!

      ~ Kathryn

Such a lovely serious poem loaded with comedic expressiveness as well, and I enjoyed the sarcasm dripping from off the page here as well towards the very end Ruby.

Yup us poets are here to stay regardless if folks don't care to love us or read our masterpieces. For we are here to entertain the hearts, minds, and soul of like minds whom are seeking our poetic vice out online and off.

This is why I myself have chosen to begin a online campaign to unite us all as a single voice, and such a day shall come for sure, I never quit at making strides to show humanity we can all unite under any given theme in this life.

Powerful poem! Thumbs up and you know the rest Ruby :)

This is a lovely poem. It's so much harder to write a poem, you need soul. Poetry bashing? They don't know what they're missing. As the saying goes "Man does not live by bread alone." Physical nourishment is not sufficient for a healthy life; man also has spiritual needs. Poetry feed that need.

Hi there, may I add my congratulations too! What a wonderful achievement - something for me to aim for. I don't know the history of your discussion, being a newbie admirer, but usually when people are derogatory about something wonderful that someone else does, they do it to make themselves feel better. I couldn't imagine being without my beautiful poet friends on HP. Which would you rather have - my wholehearted admiration for your lyrical words, or the inane and jealous ramblings of a lesser mortal? If it is the former, just disregard the latter. By the way, loved your Hub POEM!!

Yes Epi, cats. You know, Walking the Gabe Man After Midnight, that kind of cat poetry (I suppose) has no redeeming value. Who says? Well, hard to tell really, after all this is the internet, could be the self ordained poetry police, could be your neighbour or a complete stranger (most likely) who is looking for trouble and may be waiting under the bridge when you're out walking your cat. Watch Out!!!

I sound like Dr. Seuss here but not poetry about bats or hats or welcome mats but cats , oh gesh, the epi-man has to write one about cats called Pussy Poetry. lol lol

I'll see what I can come up with - the devil inside me is waiting to jump out at any minute.

But 'pray tell' who exactly is mouthing off about all of this anyway.

Hey Epi, it's ongoing poetry (and creative writing) bashing. We apparantly have nothing to contribute to the site, as we are not 'searchable'. It's never directed at any one poet, just poetry in general, and especially poetry about cats, and Haiku...

    • epigramman profile image

I am kinda lost in the fog here Ruby (and Snakeslane whom I have visited) .....what exactly happened? Who did the mouthing off?

Do you want me to send the Wild Bunch over?

      William Holden

      Ernest Borgnine

      Warren Oates

      Ben Johnson

      George Jones

      Colin Stewart

      lol

Seriously I am lost here - is hub pages kicking the poets out?

I feel like singing the Disney tune - It's a small world after all

It's a small world after all

It's a small world after all

or one of your favorites Ruby my dear by Ray Stevens

Everything is beautiful in its own wayyyyyyyyy ......

      or that old Coca-Cola commercial:

I'd like to teach the world to sing ..... in perfect harmony.

There must be such immature people around ......not to mention people who are closeminded and will not allow freech speech or artistic freedom - when the Hub fires away on all cylinders it really does remind me of the best writer's community on the internet where the world is a smaller place based on respect and sharing and support of each other - but - when it stoops to a level of badmouthing and backstabbing then it's embarrassing and childlike.

Thank goodness we have you Ruby and great people like you -

Let's make love with our poetry and not war with words.

      Amen.

George get out yer gee-tar and play a love song for Ruby here, will ya ....

Hi Ruby, I appreciate you adding your voice to the conversation. I would say, since Hub Pages provides us with a 'Poetry' venue we are good to go. And if Hub Pages ever decides that poets are not welcome, we will go elsewhere. Meanwhile I think everyone should just simmer down and enjoy. My point, in writing the Trolling piece, was to show support to Hub Pages poets, and to feature some of the awesome poetry I have found here. I'm still working on that. I love the comments here. Regards, snakeslane

      Those that hang out

      At the forum

      Only goal for readers

      is to bore ‘em

      they’ll cluck and cackle

      but get no quorum

      I don’t waste my time

      And don’t explore ’em

Ruby this is a hub full of soul. A statement, a referendum, and a true poets declarations.

I read that forum Ruby and it made me mad too. Good for you writing this in response.

Those who ridicule poetry have narrow minds and no imagination, and yes they are 'cold' if they don't let the beauty around them touch them in some way.

Live and let live is what I say.

We are all different, and that is the beauty of humanity. The idea that anyone 'mocks' another for anything that carries their heart and soul is cruel, heartless, bullying and despicable. The art of poetry has added the expression of emotion to the world. It has been an expression of joy, sorrow, anger, loss and love since man learned to communicate. Long live poetry! Thank you, Ruby, for this magnificently assertive, poetically excellent, undeniably strong statement for the diverse artform I love.

How sad for those who mock poetry...really, if they can't appreciate the beauty and feelings behind a poem, can they appreciate beauty and feelings anywhere else? You don't have to be poetry-obsessed to enjoy it...do only cooks read recipes or only authors read short stories. Really, how crass and inhumane is anyone who criticizes another's work, any work?

      Voted up, useful, and interesting.

Hello James Wolve, Nice to meet you. I guess i should explain this piece. I read some unkind remarks about another hubber friend on the forum and it upset me enough to write this ditty. Thank you for commenting...

      Ruby,

when we are young we all are poet, and when we grow old we become philosopher. However, some brilliant people remain poet all their life, and some are philosophers since young age.

When I was in school, I hated poetry. I even criticized my sister for studying literature in college. However, couple of years later, I become synchronized with poetry and the arts.

Lol! Touché! I loved this – but that’s no surprise. I wasn’t aware that people actually ridicule poets here, but there is much I don’t know about what goes on at HP. Hugs, Ruby. Voted up and sharing this classic. :-)

It's a closed and fearful heart that mocks poetry... and I think it's only a poem that will succeed in unlocking that heart.

LMAO...the last line was a classic! Let's see...the beauty of poetry or the mundane of a recipe??? Which should I choose???? Mmmm, tough one!

NOT! You know how I feel about those who ridicule poetry, or for that matter have nothing better to do with their time than to ridicule the work of any writer. The word "idiots" comes to mind. :)

      Great job, Ruby!

      LOL...

sharp, tight, and humorous as well - my friend - and - i do wonder from whence this came...Hmmmm?...

i 'grew' into my appreciation of poetry slowly, and actually Mhatter (Martin) was a big motivator back in our Triond days..

      I appreciate you my friend - it's recipe's that aren't my thing..

      lol..

      love you and your spirit...

      sharing forward..

The message is received.Poetry must have something in it that is barbaric, vast and wild.A bridge across our fears of what has never been before. People who do like to mock at poet s work, the sum of his feelings and thought, reflects only their upbringing and ignorance indeed.Up
