Rub-a-dub-dub

Updated on September 9, 2009

Started out like any other morning, he and his two fishing buddies, with all their gear and high hopes for the catch of the day... as always he checked his boat out, all the equipment , gas, oil, supplies, tools, life jackets, always, as he was a scuba diver also and knew how powerful the ocean waters can be..He always sided on the safer side .

It was a nice sunny calm day as they left the GoldenGate bridge behind them speeding along at the normal speed anticipating the fun they would have, it had been a while, with the lack of work lately and little time for such a get away, when the boat ( a GradyWhite, 25 footer) felt as if something was pulling it from behind and it felt heavy. Didn't take them long to see water rushing in and as they tried to bail it out they came to the known fact it wasn't gonna work.

The ocean has no compassion and you need to think quickly. My son called the Coast Guard and told them exactly what their location was (gps's are great) and he had all the most modern equipment possible for anything that might happen. He fished out his paperwork and made another call, the second one and had his flair gun on the ready, he could see the shore line and other fishermen were out there also, so he was feeling pretty sure they would make it.

They clung to the boat in the cold waters, all with their life preservers on, waiting, waiting and really lost track of time, but seemed the Coast guard boat arrived quickly and pulled all three of them out and on board the Cutter...One of the men wasn't even wet and had his cell phone in his pocket, but never the less all were in shock and went through a medical exam...

Coast Guard's men said they had never ever seen a GradyWhite sink and immediately called the Insurance Company and the Salvage company. although the first one was busy they had to call a second, by the time they arrived on the water scene my son's boat had been beaten against the rocks and fell apart, but what they salvaged all looked ok, so it is under investigation...

Theories have run through all our minds, maybe a chain caught his motor's propeller, maybe it hooked onto another commercial fishermens crabpot or netting full of big fish, maybe a sub-marine was under there? maybe a giant creature grabbed hold, whatever it was we may never know for sure, but what we do know is they are all safe and home and their Guardian Angels were all there.

I thank God every minute since this Friday 9-4-09 that he was saved, as well as his buddies, the boat can be replaced but not the three men that were aboard the boat that day. My son has decided NOT to replace it and I hope he doesn't scuba dive any more either...

G-Ma, glad everything turned out fine in the end too!

It's amazing how quickly a great day can turn into not-so-fun on the high seas. Of course, I'm going to have to blame ghost pirates for this.

I am so glad because of happy end. Plastic boats people have today are so vurnerable and can be really dangerous (woodden ones were better and more stable).

Many regards to you and to your son.
