Curious Thoughts

Updated on June 15, 2014

By: Wayne Brown

The media of the past few days has been overwhelmingly flooded with first the news of Bin Laden death followed by the news of his Islam services and burial at sea.  Then we began the seesaw aspect of arguing his death and the events which took place that surrounded his death including the collusion of the Pakistani officials in providing a refuse for the hunted terrorist.  Along with that the President has been riding that wave of gushing left-wing media praising him for his heroic decision-making and courage during such a tense period.

There are those in the media who go so far as to state that out of all the choices the President faced, he chose the most challenging and the most dangerous in terms of risking the lives of Americans.  Some of that is hogwash spin and a bit of that is true. In reality, there were not a lot of choices unless you are simply sitting around brain-storming without constraint.  No President in his right mind is going to send in guided missiles or drop airplane loads of bombs on a compound adjacent to a housing area of civilians.  Even if it were known that Bin Laden was inside, the choice would be utter stupidity if it created any casualties on the innocent side.  No you can quickly rule those out.  The President had two real choices…do nothing and wait or follow the action that he did with a surgical strike team focused on precision work.  True, there were risks involved but then again it was a military mission which almost always assumes some level of risk to life or limb.  For Navy Seals, it was not outside the realm of possibilities.

Of course, then we get to the aftermath.  We have an announcement of the death and then we start to hear information that the President and his security team were able to view at least some aspects of the mission via real time broadcasts from helmet cameras.  We were told that the mission was to go in and get Bin Laden if he was there in the compound.  We were told that the mission stipulation was that the Seal Team could take him dead or alive based on the circumstances at the time on the ground and Bin Laden’s reaction.  We were told there was a firefight and as a result of that firefight Bin Laden was killed suffering a wound to the chest and one to the head in the facial area.  The dominoes seem to line up and it all spoke well for a military surgical strike operation that was carried off without any loss of American life and the mission was accomplished.

Then the Monday morning press briefing was held and the President’s press secretary held forth answering questions regarding the Bin Laden scenario and attempting to fill in any holes for the journalist.  It came out that a young woman who was purported to be a wife of Bin Laden had been used as a human shield and ultimately wounded in the leg.  The firefight was mention time and again.  Then there was a confirmation that Bin Laden had not been armed.  It was around this time that one of the journalists again mentioned the firefight and the fact that Bin Laden was unarmed and asked what constituted the firefight if the opposing party was unarmed?  At this point, it was obvious that the press secretary had almost swallowed his tongue if not a full-feathered canary bird.  He was at a total loss of words to explain the situation yet the question should have been an obvious one before he even headed toward the podium for the session.

Later pictures, released by Rueters, show at least two Islamic men dead in pools of blood suggesting that they may have been shot but still there was no mention of the couriers who were there with Bin Laden being armed.  If these men were not the couriers, were they bodyguards who elected to shoot at the Seal Team and if so, why is that so difficult to explain.  It certainly does not violate any secrecy in terms of methods used or tactics employed.  That singular event began to undermine some of the credibility associated with the story.  Some journalists speculated that the story of the events had passed through so many filters that surely some details that linked the events had been overlooked.  At the same time, there was never any of offer to bring forward a military commander who was indeed close to the action and potential may have been privy to the mission report which would have described in great detail what took place.  This individual most certainly could have done a better job of briefing this situation than the press secretary who undermined it.

Then, of course, came the icing on the cake or the decision regarding the photos of a dead Bin Laden.  That discussion did not have to go on very long before the President put it to rest with his decision to lock up the photos and swallow the key.  He cited our compassion as Americans not to gloat and emphasized the importance that such photos, be it only one, not be floating around in the public domain, for fear of the potential issues that it might raise.  Never mind the Islamic world does not rely on America to provide them with their facts thus they sit in wait for some real evidence that we indeed did kill this man.  Oh, but we did argues the President because we checked his DNA but we are not showing you that either for it just makes no sense.  But, on that note, the President did decided that returning to Ground Zero, a place he has avoided like the plague, would be a fitting touch for him in the aftermath of this historic event.  Even Bush and Clinton had the good sense to stay away from that event.

So those terrible issues upon which conspiracy so rapidly breeds are indeed alive and well in this historic event.  Again, the American people are left to believe what they are told and only that.  The government does not want any conspiracy theories but it is doing everything right to create them.  So now we have factions yelling “oh yes, he’s dead, the government said that he was, so he is”.  And other factions saying something to the effect that the government is simply lying and wanting the American people to believe it like so many of the other little white lies they have told in years past.  Suddenly the whole matter is red meat for the wolves and how they feast upon it.

So, this is about the place in the piece where one of you steps forward and says, “Okay, Mr. Wayne, Okay Mr. Smarty Pants Conservative Right-Wing Scribe…remember, it’s good to call them names!  What do you think?  Well, thanks for asking.  Since you did, I’ll toss a couple of thoughts around with you and see how they ride the old brain waves.

One thing that occurs to me early on is that a plan by the government to lie about Bin Laden being dead would not work very well if Bin Laden indeed was not dead.  All Bin Laden would have to do is show the world some sign of his existence and the whole thing blows up in the face of the US government and we look like idiots to the world and surely wreck our future credibility.  Thus, I don’t see that being a viable option and besides, who would benefit by it except maybe some stupid politician willing to do anything to get some votes.  No I can’t buy that approach.  So, then Mr. Wayne…you do indeed believe the government did kill Bin Laden?  Hang on…now you are putting words in my mouth. Let’s take a different approach.

Let’s say there was a tired old terrorist named Bin Laden who was hiding in his compound just outside the capitol of Pakistan.  Let’s say that some in the Pakistani government were aware of his being in that compound at various times but sympathized with his efforts and thus said nothing.  Finally, U S Intelligence puts together enough information to be suspicious of this compound but they do not spell that fact out in their discussions with Pakistan.  Instead, they operate on the assumption that someone in Pakistan has a communications channel with Bin Laden.  So in their discussions, U S officials simply let it be known that they feel they are close to capturing and killing Bin Laden but would entertain the idea of showing mercy if he so chose to cooperate.  Let’s just say that information gets relayed back to Bin Laden.

Now, Bin Laden has created an image for himself in the Islamic world as being a warrior who is dedicated to the destruction of the United States.  His feats such as 9-11 have certainly gone to great lengths to prove his determination and earn him followers.  At the same time, years have past and much water has gone under the bridge.  Bin Laden’s health has declined and potentially he may well be in the early stages of renal failure.  He needs medical attention on a level that he cannot provide while he is on the run and hiding.  He is at a crossroads yet not willing to go claim his virgins as some of his followers have.

Given this circumstance and the awareness that indeed to US is closing in on him, Bin Laden weighs his alternatives.  Obviously, he would not make a very desirable public prisoner of the USA. That would cause more issues than it would ever be worth.  Instead he must drop out of sight and the only way to do that is to fake his death.  Word flows back through channels to Bin Laden’s mentor of past years, the CIA that he is willing to cut a deal.  He will come in out of the cold and secretly become an informant of the CIA if certain requirements are met on his behalf.  If not, then, if indeed he is to be captured, he is situated to destroy all that is in his possession and the world will never be privy to the potential knowledge which he possess on the terrorist organization which he has created.  He will trade his information in complete secrecy for a situation in which his death is faked and his body cannot be recovered.  In addition, he wants the necessary medical care his renal condition demands and a comfortable and secure place in seclusion to spend the rest of his days.  The CIA gains the benefit of his knowledge and he in turn extends his life and gets off of the merry go round at the same time.

The CIA likes the idea and sees benefit in it.  The wheels start turning to put the necessary chain of evidence in place.  The CIA begins working with the Seal Team on a secret operation to take Bin Laden down.  The members of the team are sworn to secrecy both in what they see, hear, and can divulge in the aftermath.  Though the media will report that a team of over forty Seals raided the compound, only six will actually ever be in the presence of Bin Laden.  The remaining force involved will be various members of Special Forces units aided by civilian CIA specialists such as helicopter pilots.  Those individuals will be engaged in secondary security and the search of other areas of the compound.  The Seal Team has orders to fire on Bin Laden’s bodyguards and any other security surrounding him but only the on-scene CIA commander can issue the order to kill Bin Laden if the situation is indeed a trick.  Thus, a firefight of sorts does take place in which those guarding Bin Laden are eliminated.  In fact, the scenario requires they be eliminated.  The woman used as a human shield and shot in the leg is actually a CIA operative who has coordinated this event from inside the compound.  She is known to Bin Laden.  She is wounded for effect which will allow her an avenue to depart the scene under medical care and then quickly drop out of sight afterwards. Meanwhile the “shooting” of Bin Laden is carried out but the individual is not Bin Laden but another of his followers.  Bin Laden is then disguised as the other man and both him and the body are taken from the scene to the helicopter for retreat.

In the aftermath, the CIA controls the cleansing of the fake Bin Laden body and prepares it for what they know will be a controversial burial at sea but that burial will in effect hide the fact that the body was not that of Bin Laden.  Few could tell anyway since the victim was conveniently shot in the face so disfiguring him as to not readily produce a recognizable face.  Meanwhile the focus of those on the carrier is on the funeral and burial of Bin Laden.  Under that cover, the CIA ferries the living party which they picked up off of the vessel indicating to commanders that the man is an informant and will be returned to his homeland.  This then allows Bin Laden to be taken to his secure refuge and the process to begin whereby he provides the CIA with the intelligence necessary to ferret out the chief operatives and effectively close down the organization.  Meanwhile, Bin Laden becomes a martyr and returns to the life of a quiet Islamic receiving the necessary medical attention and the lavish lifestyle which he has come to enjoy.

Do I believe this scenario?  Not necessarily but given the cards which are being played in the explanation and surrounding the events, it is not beyond the realm of possibilities.  We can only wonder.  Oh, I know, there is one more thing that you are anxious to know before I go so I’ll go ahead and put it on the table.  “What’s to keep the members of Seal Team 6 from spilling their guts?”  Really, that is not that hard to figure out.  When one elects the life of a Seal, they embrace the dangers associated with it.  One obvious one is that the missions are very dangerous and could easily cost one their life if the made the wrong type of mistake…talking about certain events might well increase the odds that those mistakes could happen.  Seals can figure that out for themselves.

What you choose to believe here has a lot to do with how much you trust your government and the various agencies that make it up.  For some, it’s a slam dunk, for others, it’s questionable, and then for others the dog just won’t hunt.  You have to decide where you land.

I dont care if it was Six, or Remo Williams Bin KLaden was an extremely bad man with a pathological hatred of Kufirs[Non Muslims] and the west, He ran out of killing Russians and decided to vent his spleen on the West, and what he percieved to be a hot bed of immorality

Why are people saying he wasn't buried according to muslum tradition? I understand muslems can be buried at sea, besides having him buried on land would give his followers a place to honor him. Screw that.

This is an extremely interesting take of the whole affair Wayne. And most interesting to me and also plausible due to the fact that in two years, we have not known the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth even to a point of birth or school records. Given the religious standings of the potus, you may well be correct. I do not trust tim and as far as hiding OBL, it would only benefit the porus when he is booted out of office. Why did he leave his golf game to watch? I am not near as trusting as the rest of the US is...I see a possible credence in your whole explanation of this matter noone seems to have the answers to....I do not believe nor trust what they "allow" us to view on the news and I do know the potus will sinkus before he backsus as a nation. I for one applaud your story...where's the birth certificate and the school records??? Enquiring minds want the truth and the new one is a forgery. Thanks for this outlook on recent events and this is nothing which has not been done before to the rest of you. Blessings Wayne, great hub...from a former TX girl makin her way back home.

@THAT Mary Ann: This becomes the only viable way that I can explain how the man would not have been killed. I cannot imagine the U S Government wanting this man as a prisoner. At the same time, unless he was looking for a coward's way out, he likely would not have been taken alive given that he believed in his cause. But, there's that part of me that writes for the movies that says, if it could be done, would would it be done. You know, kind of like OJ writing that book on how he would have killed his wife if he had killed her? LOL! Thanks, Mary Ann. WB

@Mimi721wis....I fear that someone far worse will replace him on the videos...all these guys love facetime on camera regardless of religious affiliation! LOL! I agree that there is no way the US would have taken Bin Laden alive as a "public prisoner". That is why my conjecture is that if he is indeed still alive it is because the CIA felt it worthwhile to fake his death and hide him out for information purposes. Of course that premise assumes a "cooperative" Bin Laden. Even if that were the case, I have no problem with it in that America gets the advantage of having an information source on the terrorist organizations. The up side for Bin Laden is he continues to be seen as a hero of his people. It's a win/win. WB

Hi Wayne, at least we should not see anymore of those tacky videos. If the Navy Seals would have taken Ben Laden alive there would have surely been some kind of silliness about where to have his trial. You never know the murderous monster may have had sympathizers creating all kind of problems. It pleases me that our president let it be know that we will hunt down terrorist thugs and bring them to justice dead or alive.

@Casey White...It would be good to believe he is dead. I guess his capture and death come on a less than spectacular basis...something akin to the death of Elvis...Bin Laden shot dead in his underwear. One way or the other, I think he is off the streets. @chspublish...I doubt there ever will be as long as we have to take the word of the administration for all that has or has not happened. The Kennedy assasination is proof enough of that and in all liklihood LBJ had much to cover up. WB

@samiaali...Hopefully he is dead if such a scenario as I have outlined did not occur. It would be the only way the USA would want him alive and the only way Osama could still be a hero to his own...we'll never know. WB

@Genna East...I don't know that I totally subscribe to the theory I put forth either, Genna. But I do feel it is the only method by which the USA could have him alive and Bin Laden could still be the hero of his people in death or supposed death. Thanks for good problem with the length! WB

Excellent article, Wayne. Although I don’t agree with all over your statements, you present clear and well-written arguments, as usual.

My chief complaint with this administration has been its terribly poor communication, and I was embarrassed see that this did not abate on such a momentous day in history as reporting the facts surrounding the death of Osama bin Laden. What a stark contrast to the superb training and coordination it took to pull off this amazing raid to begin with. Personally, I did not care to see this infamous criminal garner more attention by having a photo with part of his skull shot off splattered all over the media, but that’s just my opinion. I was surprised to see a few family members of those lost on 9/11 voice the same sentiments. Nor do I think that his photo would have allayed any conspiracy theories in the days of photo shop, etc. The release of the DNA is another matter, and I am mildly curious as to why this is not available.

Now we see legal experts debate whether or not the killing of this man was “legal.” If Bin Laden had refused to raise his hands in surrender and had reached for anything, they were right to shoot him. This man had long bragged that he would never be taken alive. The Seals had only seconds to react, in the dead of night with night vision gear, and without knowing what type of weapons he had hidden within his clothing or near his person. OBL was certainly awakened by the ruckus before the Seals ever reached the third floor. “Dead or alive,” means dead or alive. My cynical side also tells me that I have no doubt that the Seals also knew or were told that bringing him on a stretcher, lifeless, would be less far less costly in numerous ways than bringing him in alive.

As to whether or not this actually is Bin Laden, I believe that it was, but for far too many reason to list here. Will we ever know all of the details as to how Bin Laden met his death? Unless we were in that compound, in that room, at those very moments he lost his life, probably not. And such is life as we know it today.

My apologies for the long comment, Wayne. Up and awesome on your hub, btw.

Hi Wayne Brown, I don't know if we will ever know the complete and full truth about what happened and all the specific details, but I will say, that for my part, I am glad he's dead. I am glad that he was killed quickly and disposed of just as quickly. He was a cold-blooded killer that didn't deserve to take one more breath. I am so glad that he was eliminated and that he was not captured. What a circus that would have been! :)

Very entertaining reading! I've believed Bin Laden was dead for several years, now. I also believe this was just a stunt to raise Obama's ratings with the American public. There's absolutely nothing about the whole story that makes sense, but it sure is doing a good job of keeping Americans from focusing on the real issues.

Well, we will never know the exact truth despite the presidents "transparency" promise. I think the entire event is pumped up and I am sick of hearing about it and especially sick of seeing the president grandstand the entire thing. I can't even watch the news anymore as that little wimp struts and gives speeches and takes credit for something he was so terrified to enact he had to ask the real president, Valerie Jarrett what to do. All of which proves it was totally a political move in order to dispel his image as a weak, indecisive wimp.Well it didn't work.

I personally don't care if Bin Laden was armrd. For a certainty, his bodyguards were. He knew his life was in danger 24/7 and chose that way of life. So if he was shot without him holding a weapon, I am good with that.

The whole quick burial at sea is just weird. I don't believe for a second that he decided to ally with American covert operations. I do beleive he may be held prisoner by our government.

And the gruesome photso? well, there have been those published showing two men in a pool of blood. And certainly the public has seen much worse. The dead bin Laden photos could be released with a "Warning" caption.

In any regard this whole hoopla is drama to remove the public's focus from other critical issues. Like $4.00 a gallon gas. It is fine as long as bin Laden is dead?!!!

Very thoughtful Hub you have here.

This is certainly more plausible than the one on CNN at the moment. They are the masters of sudsy news and who ever said soaps should be realistic? This has all the drama with none of the close up gore that would be so upsetting to the public. Great hub! Now I'm off to watch CSI :)

My mom and I were curious about why the sea burial when we were pretty sure Muslims don't do that. I tell you - now would be a good time to distract the public with another better story!

Wayne, this may not be very far from the truth! That burial at sea is simply questionable. Even more so when it was reported that it is not even within Islamic tradition.

I actually pictured that scenario in my mind - "his heroic decision-making and courage during such a tense period." Then the following day I saw the "situation room" photo - definitely not how I imagined it.

      @SilentReed - that is hilarious!!!

It is plausible given the government's track record of lying to the public in the name of national security.Conspiracy theories cannot be discounted.Hollywood would certainly benefit. It would make for an exciting plot and possible sequels ?Osama bin ladin, return of Osama bin ladin, revenge of Osama bin ladin,Osama bin ladin final episode :))

Wayne, At the top of your Hub there is a picture of two individuals. I take it one is Osama, which one is he?

We will never know exactly what happened, but the Seal Team had a mission. Everyone supported George W. Bush wwhen he said, Bin Laden is wanted dead or alive. If anyone says it was the wrong thing to kill him, shame on the hypocrite. H

A very plausible scenario, Wayne, made possible by the story of the 'burial at sea' which would be a break with Islamic tradition.

Will we ever know the true story? Doubt it.

I'll just bet you're right and the earlier generations of these folks pulled the same thing off with Elvis ... him being in ill health too, all these reporting of sitings. I personally believe we will see both of them again at some 7-Eleven. Laden hooked up to what looks like a Slurpee machine but is in fact his dialysis, Elvis disguised as ... lets see, a complete face lift and stomach stapling, some hair removal, he would pass for Jimmy Hoffa. I sure am glad you figured this one out. It coulda been kinda tricky for us simple minded folk. Big thanks to ya! ;)
