Saying Goodbye To a Friend: A Poem

Updated on July 1, 2014

It's so hard to let go

When love is all that a heart knows

To let someone in that way

Invites a world of potential pain

And the closer it is I feel

The longer it takes my heart to heal

To lose a loved one or a friend

Does not make the world end

Neither does the loss of a significant other

Still, it sends the heart looking for cover

Licking wounds and nursing pain

That's hard to simply push away

Weeks, months, and even years

May pass between the tears

But then a single memory can reignite

All the affection still carried deep inside

Better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all

So, again, I'll allow the tears to fall

Reminds me of the song "I will survive", great job.

Haha Eric. . .Well, as you can see from my musical choice, that is not what I am reminded of. ;) Though, i suppose "I Will Survive" also applies. Just had people on my mind lately. Lots of things happening that cause memories of others to pop up. Maybe it's just a bit of nostalgia, but it makes me miss them. Whether they have passed away, drifted away naturally, or something happened between us. . .I don't hold grudges so I still care and miss them.

Thank you, Gypsy. It is definitely much easier knowing a goodbye is not permanent. Either way, memories do remain.

Aw, Ms. ImKarn, thanks! Ain't it funny how things like anger can be so fleeting yet things like hurt or empathy for another will stick around longer than any other emotion? At least for me, though there is a point when one must choose to let even that go before it turns into despair. But, of all the so-called negative emotions, I think that sadness is probably the most healing. Definitely the least harmful to the health. Tears are cleansing and relaxing while anger or bitterness and the like cause unnecessary tension in the body.

That song is definitely sad. I made me cry when I was a teen first hearing it. Still does if I am sad or missing someone.

By the way, I did FINALLY go to the other computer to add you as a skype buddy. But, like I said, I rarely use it. Sorry. Pick up a phone, sweets, you'll be more likely to reach me for "real time" talk. :p

Great poem. There is not a day goes by I don't think of someone I have lost; if not many. ^+
