Searching Far and Wide

Updated on June 6, 2015

He seemed to be searching

far and ever so wide

for the one love he could find

that would always be loving and true

in his imaginative thoughts

he painted wonderful pictures

of nymphs and mermaids

playing in the sea

but it always seemed

the faces were distant

and non-descriptive

it was as though he couldn’t yet visualize

the lovely face he was seeking

it was or so it seemed

that the more he dreamed

he needed to paint the one face

that would someday become

the face of his true love

they came and they admired

his work from near and far

and treated him like a star

but as much as they

scattered their praise

he remained alone and forlorn

then one day the muses

were ever so kind

and in no time at all

while they were singing

romantic songs in his mind

he painted a marvelous seascape

with a mermaid

with the face of an angel

and hair like the dawning of a new day

it was with trembling heart

that with this painting he did part

giving it to an art gallery

hoping that in the admiring throngs

he’d see that one face

the face of the mermaid he’d painted

upon the body of his one true love

the painting was a sensation

and everyone thought they knew

someone with the face that they saw

on the lovely mermaid

sitting upon a rock by the sea

then it seemed his world

began rocking out of control

and a light seemed to be beaming from above

there out of the crowd

came the face of his true love

she radiated beauty

her eyes so bright

hair like the rising sun

lip as red as cherries

with bated breath

he approached her

afraid she might just disappear

for someone like this

couldn’t possibly be real

and somewhere far off

he heard his muses begin to sing

as he gently took her hand

and led her to the painting

he saw her standing there

and was surprised to see

tears streaming down her cheeks

then she turned to him

and they were the sweetest words

he had ever heard, “I always fantasized being a mermaid under the sea”

and from then on

they kept the painting

a symbol of the love they shared

and lived in a cottage by the sea

where the muses played and inspired

and love blossomed and grew

like the roses along the path

to the deep blue sea and the golden sand

a love forever for all time

Interesting poem. Love is an intangible, and very different to each seeker. Thanks for a great read.

Chill bumps. Hoping I can be someone's mermaid someday. Voted up and all that jazz.

      Gypsy Rose Lee,

Nice dialogue going on here! BEAUTIFUL!

Her words completed his firm determination. Beatles lyrics, good compliment. ..."she kept calling"... Your work here, in my opinion, paints the vividness of how words of affirmation, to oneself, to another, even while kept in the heart, do rise above the waters of uncertainty; lovely.

Well, well, what a beautifully romantic poem. Lovely. It's uplifting, being full of hope which is finally fulfilled. It does happen but sometimes, like this, it takes a long time.
