Seconds: A Graphic Novel Review

Updated on February 4, 2018

Hi! I'm Courtney and I recently read a graphic novel called, "Seconds" by Bryan Lee O'Malley. You may or may not be familiar with the artist/author, but he also wrote the "Scott Pilgrim" book series.

Anyways, I thought about reading this book for quite some time because I do love graphic novels (because graphic novels are great!). However, I never picked up the book until a few weeks ago. But when I finally did start reading it, I couldn't put it down.

The Plot

The book is a mystery in itself, really... But it's also sweet and romantic. The manga is about a manager and chef named Katie who runs a restaurant named, "Seconds". Her business once thrived when she was surrounded with friends, but as she grew older the business declined and she had to hire on new chefs and management.

For a while, Katie didn't like her life at all. She didn't realize that a house spirit was living with her in her home until she found a small booklet in her dresser drawer with the words, "my mistakes" written on it and placed mysteriously beneath a small mushroom. Included were a set of simple instructions for her to follow.

1: write your mistake on the paper.

2: eat the mushroom.

3: sleep and wake anew.

Katie didn't know what would happen if she ate the mushroom, but she found the next day that her life had changed dramatically and her mistake had been erased. Every mistake she makes during the story eventually affects herself, her love life, her friends, and her entire existence.

The Characters

Katie: The manager of the restaurant, "Seconds", and the main character of the book. Katie gets angry easily but her life isn't too simple. She is a hard worker who is trying to keep a thriving business even though a lot of people disagree with her. She changes her life when she discovers a technique to erase her past mistakes, but she doesn't realize it changes too much.

Max: Katie's ex who used to work at Seconds, he is a nice character but tries to look cool. He admires Katie for her passion at the restaurant, but they made a mistake and that was the end of their relationship.

Hazel: Hazel is a shy young waitress at Seconds. Later in the story she helps Katie through her house spirit problem. Hazel has a few secrets in the story that you find out about more towards the end.

Final Thoughts

Like I said, this book is a mystery in itself. The author did an amazing job with the art, writing, and story of Seconds.

Seconds is fairly new-ish; it was released in July of 2014. Okay, I take that new-ish comment back — the book is several years old. However, it is available in a lot of bookstores, so I recommend checking it out.

In my opinion the art was amazing, the story was amazing, and I loved the characters.

Art: 9/10

Story: 9/10

Characters: 10/10

Thank you for reading my blog! It is my first blog, but I think I like doing this. If you liked this blog, hopefully you'll like the next and check it out!
