Self Reflective Nightmare

Updated on April 29, 2011

On the third night

   Of self destruction

       Sleepless, restless, thrice

    Only remnants remain

  Of logical process

Of irrational thoughts

I’m focused on myself

   For the world again

      Has abandoned me

       And though my heart

    Roams beyond my reach

My eyes are set only on

The reflection before me

     It resembles me, yes

   But I see not myself

For darkness reigns

  In his sinister eyes

And I fear what I’ve seen

      Now a thousand times

 I hear the rhythm

   The music, dull, behind me

It used to move me, call me

    Now, my body ignores me

  My reflection’s smiling

But I know that it’s not me

      Dimming lights

     Shadows creeping

    Ringing in my ear

   Paralyzing fear

  I hear breathing

 But my lungs

Aren't expanding

Floorboards creaking

I know I locked the door

    I know that I’m alone

     But this laughter…

       It cannot be my own

Oh, yeah, Ben. Hi-five there LOL I'm looking in the mirror again =) Nicely done, love the structure, it adds the character to the whole picture. Powerful stuff!

Nice shadow play. Scary though as I gather you were facing an element of your shadow.

Yes a nice tight spooky package that does go with the song, but why did they decide to record it in the back of a rusty goods wagon? Not one for us oldies to savour. Cheers though.

Yeah, seriously creepy stuff. It's hard to decipher what is your true inner turmoil and what is simply written to scare the reader. Always keep that mysterious aura.

I agree with Liz: love Donnie D. Great flick. Peace.

This reminds me of a time when I was really depressed, but in a way I feel good reading it for I know that I am better. It's a good reminder. Thanks

What can I say? You write so well that even this specter is incredibly well done. But - why this this choice, Ben? I hope it's just a facet of your writing genius.

First off, I love the movie Donnie Darko, second, this poem is epic. You are amazing at making your readers feel like this is what they are experiencing, you not only create the scene but get us to be in it. Awesome! :)

Very powerfully produces images for me that I'm not sure I want to see. Thanks? for the good nights sleep? Truly, you can produce nightmares, pain, sorrow, joy, the whole gambit in your readers. You are a master writer, Ben.
