Self-realization - A poem
An old man, at the age of 70, waiting for his death, looks back at his life and realizes some facts of life. I have tried to compile his thoughts in the form of a poem. Hope his self-realization has made you to realize some facts of life.
When you were with me,
I felt the whole world was with me!
When I was behind you,
I forgot my whole world!
When I was with you,
My whole world looked greener!
When I was 20, I was behind you all the time.
But, my LOVE, you left me!
LOVE, you made me realize that
“I don’t have it, when I need it!”
When I had you,
I felt that I could have the whole world!
When I was behind you,
I forgot my whole world!
When I had plenty of you,
My whole world looked greener!
When I was 30, I was behind you all the time,
But, my MONEY, you are always not enough.
MONEY, you always make me realize that,
“I don’t have it, when I need it!”
When you were with me,
I didn’t feel that you were my whole world!
When you were behind me,
I forgot to take time out of the whole world!
When you wanted to spend time with me,
I had no time for you!
When I was 40, I wanted to spend time with you.
But, my CHILDREN, you told that you wanted to enjoy your teen life alone!
CHILDREN, you taught me a good lesson and made me realize that
“I don’t have it, when I need it!”
When you were with me,
I felt that I could conquer the whole world!
When you was behind me,
I didn’t take care of me!
When I missed you even for two days,
I felt that my world was not at all green!
When I was 50, I wanted to have you.
But my HEALTH, you are leaving me, as I didn’t take care of you!
HEALTH you left me to make me realize that,
“I don’t have it, when I need it!”
When you were all with me,
I felt that I still have the other world to conquer!
When you all were following me,
I forgot to follow you all!
When you were all willing to celebrate me,
I was engaged in other celebrations!
When I’m 60 now, I want you all in my life.
But, my FAMILY & FRIENDS, you don’t want me anymore!
FAMILY & FRIENDS, you left me all alone to make me realize that,
“I don’t have it, when I need it!”
When you was with me,
I was searching for you in another world!
When you were following me,
I never took time to sense your presence!
When you were always lending your hand to me,
I didn’t even make an attempt to hold it!
When I’m 70 now, I want to come to you.
But, Oh! My GOD, you don’t want to call me now!
Oh! My GOD, you have still given me life to realize that,
“I don’t have it, when I need it!”
Through my life, I don’t want you to realize that,
“You don’t have it, when you need it!”
I want to tell you that,
“Enjoy it, when you have it!”
When you are behind something always,
I tell you, you will always remain behind.
I want to have a rebirth, to enjoy every walk of my life.
But, Oh! My GOD, don’t tell me that this is my last birth!
Oh! My GOD, you have to give me one more life to tell the world that,
“I have it, when I enjoy it!”

So profound thoughts !. sankari.nayagam. Thank you.
This is stunning work! A great message, on that all of us should realize at a young age and move forward... Beautiful, inspiring poetry.. Glad to meet you :)
Facts of life. We run behind the future and forget to care the present. We forget that only if the present is taken care only then there is really a meaningful future. Very well written!

What a humanly realistic statement you made in your poem.
Youth needs to read and listen and act on the truth...but alas they probably will do just as the rest of us do too often...until we realize...a simple AND complicated poetry, well realized! Thank you for sharing.
Reflects great attitude.

Yes, enjoy your win, Sankari!Your poem is very true, reminds us of how fragile life is. And the need to take care. Thanks for sharing!
Good values taught about living in the moment and enjoying each aspect of life instead of chasing dreams that may or may not materialize or looking back worrying about things of which nothing can be done. Congratulations on the daily draw contest win!
Great message here. Yet peers think you are wasting time if you take time for love, children, family, God.
What a great poem. Makes my feel like not getting old enough to reflect on how it all went wrong.
Such a realistic picture of the human condition... So often it seems that we cannot grasp the concept of living in the moment, and remembering to be grateful for what we have instead of worrying about what we don't have... Voted up, awesome, beautiful and interesting.
This is beautiful and painfully true. so much of looking back at one's life at any age is to think "what if I had done this or what if I had not done that"...?"
Very touching and deep poem about the reality of life. Good work. Voted up and will share in facebook!
