Shovel Your Stress Away

Updated on February 20, 2014

Nobody Will Stop You

You can shovel to your hearts content

Friends or family might ask you why ?

As long as they don't have to shovel they don't mind

Some might give you an odd look

Whatever makes you happy

I have found it works wonders

No more worries

As they are suddenly blocked by my aching arms and back

I take a deep breath and shovel some more

I made a path where there was none before

I cut in here and circle around t here

Up in the air

You should see that snow fly

How high can I make each pile ?

I am not done

I have just begun

I have my trusty warm gloves on

So I can shovel all day into the night

I have my head covered with a hat

So wind is no problem

I sometimes wear a snowsuit and boy I can really sweat

Other times I throw on a winter jacket and just bundle up

I can go in any direction

Sometimes I take a little rest

Then I carefully see what I have done

The light snow on the top is if I am a little aggravated

The heavy snow underneath is when I am really mad

Digging down deep I have to cut in all directions

Like I am cutting a piece of cake

Then when I see a real big chunk of snow come out

You should see the smile on my face

Now I still have to lift it

Sometimes I cut it in half

Other times it slides off my shovel before I throw it

Each pile leads to another pile

I can feel my wrists on that toss

Stopping to catch my breath again

Two, three hours have passed

I have talked to myself

A form of self therapy

I have tried cursing and cussing

That gets boring after awhile

My all time favorite is talking about the people in my life

Who are really special

I praise them up and down and for all the things they have done

I even end with I know you can hear me

When I am out of breath and out of energy

I have reached my limit

Yes good bye stress

Now I can go back in my home

Hop into a nice shower and feel refreshed

Look at any situation differently

Because I know I always have a choice

I can grab a shovel and shovel more snow

Then I think as I take a couple of Motrin

A muscle reliever when I feel real sore

What a work out

No gym fees

No lines

Just me against the snow

What a way to go

I am real thirsty and I can't wait to drink lots of water

I have even gone so far as to have my favorite shovel

One made of plastic is nice and light

The snow slides off too quickly

I hate to shovel the same snow twice

Then I have a heavy old metal one

After ten shovels full I never want to see it again

My favorite is a light metal shovel my wife bought me last year

It has a strong metal tip

It cuts through the snow like a knife cuts through butter

Even the crusty snow is no match

The snow sits great in the shovel and it slides out easy

It goes exactly where it is meant to go

It was a little pricey but after using it as many times as I have

it is worth it's weight in gold

Well I will call it a day

That I started out frustrated, aggravated and full of stress

Now I sit here happy as I can be

Looking at all the white fluffy stuff

I am relaxed and my head is clear

I don't care what happens

As long as I don't have to shovel more snow

kj force I may curse it and then embrace it at the same time. The snow kills the germs and looks so nice and fluffy. Then our heating bills go up and then I can't wait till it goes. Thank you for your comments.Talk soon if you are bored and need a break from all that sunshine.(lol)

Deep in snow. Nice way to share your daily routine. Its also very easy to read. It flows fast while the imagery comes before my inner eye, seeing you in the snow, shoveling.

Gypsy Rose Lee I seen your double post I had to keep them both. Laughing as I also knew someone who could complain for hours about the snow. He would spend more time and energy cursing the damn snow than it took him to shovel it. Thank you for your time and comment.

You had me smiling remembering this guy who used to say, "I'm so tired of always shoveling other peoples' shit." lol He was a janitor.

Really great poem:) I think lot of activities that we enjoy or that we just keep on doing can free us from stress. And talking to oneself, I recognize that to well;) When i am to stressed I walk, I can walk for hours, talking and thinking. Makes me feel a lot better.

Hi Dream On. It depends where you live in Australia. The far north is tropical and temperatures are mostly hot around 38 to 40 Celsius in Summer, down to about 25 C in Winter minimum. I am close to Brisbane in SE Queensland. Summer max about 43 Winter minimum -3 minimum (but only for about 4 or 5 days that low). The only real snow are in the highlands in NSW and ACT around Snowy Mountains(Mt Kosciusko), a little in parts of Victoria and Tasmania. Weather in the southern states varies a lot from very hot to cold. Tasmania's weather is they say more like Britain, but has been drier in recent years and had bush fires.Tasmania max about 33 Summer, minimum -10 C Winter. South Aust and Western Aust...dry and hot. 90% of country gets no snow.

Jodah I am curious about the weather in Australia ? How hot in the summer and cold in the winter does it get ? The snow looks nice but it can get pretty messy if it rains or when the weather turns warm. Thank you for reading and sharing.

DDE By channeling my energy to do something productive and freeing my mind of idle thoughts I feel better. Just one way of many to work through any stress that comes my way.annart I love your ideas. I also cut my grass and being close to nature brings out the best of me. Writing also helps me sort out my thoughts. Thank you both for reading and sharing. Have a beautiful day.

Great poem! I find that hard physical work is so therapeutic, apart from being good exercise. It's satisfying because you've achieved something and the best form of tiredness is from physical effort. Gardening and looking after the grandchildren does the same for me! Ann

Shovel Your Stress Away sounds like too much to cope with shoveling snow. The mind keeps busy and builds more frustration if this continues.

jhamann From one person who shovels snow to another there is more than enough snow to go around. When you are out in the snow you have plenty of time to think. Thank you for reading and commenting.Have a beautiful day.

Having shoveled miles of snow in the past, I felt these memories return in force. Wonderful read and great poetry. Jamie
