Simple Gift to Increase Success and Transform Lives

Updated on April 28, 2009

You wake up and have this nagging feeling that you are forgetting something important all day long. Two days later you talk with a friend and for some reason, they are distant… You probe – what is wrong? Then it hits you like a TON OF BRICKS! You forgot their birthday – UGH…

A client has been putting you off – they won't answer your calls. Don’t they have a sense of urgency? A little while ago, they were hoping you could produce and deliver way ahead of schedule – what happened? They won't tell you - did you forget something?

The modern age has us running around so fast with at least 2,000 things on our mind at once. Facebook tries to help us personalize with its database of calendar reminders for friends’ birthdays, Jive Systems leads the way in attempting to humanize emails, and we know writing a few personalized notes would change everything.

This suggestion can be a guaranteed solution!

It is a simple gift, for you, or for others, that can transform lives.

The idea

Gary Smalley says one way to improve our relationships is to honor the other, (especially to help the man in your life) by giving advance warning of an upcoming special event i.e. your anniversary.

He said there’s a huge disadvantage associated with not having signs posted everywhere for 60 days as we do to remind us of Christmas.

Why not create a “Dates to Remember” book?

Can you imagine how amazed a fellow team member would feel if you gave them a little note to congratulate them on a special award they received 2 years earlier?

The effect

You could perpetuate the little known “grandparents day” that would warm their hearts for months! Have ample warning that Dad's day is next month - in time to make something.

You'd easily see when events were such as graduations, anniversaries - dates we don't usually remember to keep handy, even after attending the original event. Rewriting them on each year's new calendar gets old.

When I had my ‘Binding MasterPieces’ business, I offered to make personally customized gifts people could give with added photos, memory pages etc. They were well received treasures!

Imagine people to include - in the book, or to give to as a gift

Why?

Wasn't it Rockefeller who kept notes for every friend and acquaintance? Before attending a dinner party, he'd ask for a guest list and review details. Can you imagine how special they felt when he asked them about an event or person that meant a lot to them? No wonder he was so successful!

Selling art in Hawaii I followed his lead, making sure to jot down personal details as I built my client list. It felt incredible to receive responses from over 2500 people about how touched they were that I remembered what was important to them. Caring to take a few moments by writing a mini letter to re-connect, can deepen relationships better than anything I have experienced.

Why not feel that joy yourself? Alternatively, you could ensure the success of someone you know just starting out in his or her career.

We touch so many people in our lives who would love to receive a book like this from us. They are simple to create and your connections will definitely be enhanced. Even remembering one of the special moments in the lives of our loved ones lets them know how much we care.

Just imagine who you'd like to include, or give one to: teachers, fellow board members, customers, in-laws or step parents, neighbors, co-workers (or make points with your boss?), best buds & friends, cousins, aunts, uncles, your parents - and especially your grandparents!

Didn’t we all have an address book we kept handy to not lose touch? Modern technology eliminated those but a couple of my old ones have tiny notes scribbled in the margins and they make me smile with each jogged memory!

As a scrapper, I know we sometimes get too busy to journal about an event before organizing and actual creation.

Why not have special books to jot down details with a mere one of the pictures as reference?

As authors and/or public speakers, we keep journals. Often to create stories or speeches and once published or spoken – they are gone. Since it’s the people in our lives that create the most treasured times,

Why not have a journal of them too?

Pictured are a few more suggestions for content pages.

A most incredible machine is available now too. The CRICUT is a Scrappers/Creators dream come true! It produces professional looking scrolls, lettering and about anything you can imagine! There are MANY places that offer it much less expensively than WalMart! I discovered a recent connection to save over half if you were to get it and all the attachments, cartridges etc (a $360 savings!) through Provo craft (Link shown - I experienced wonderfully friendly assistance from both their sales and customer service departments). Even from our favored Amazon, it's less but I haven't compared totals with different attachments. That would depend on how extensively you want to use it.

You can create everything from cards, scrapbook designs through materials for teachers to etching glass in minutes – wow! If you decide to use this suggestion for a book to remember everyone's special dates, having this machine will make its creation simple as pie in minutes. Of course, every card you make, the recipients will think you spent huge amounts of money on too! They'll feel even more special.

The machine isn't necessary though. What will make your book(s) so valued is that it will make your life easier, or your loved ones feel more special. And, giving it as a gift will indeed transform the life of whoever decides to add that special caring we all long to return to these days. :)

Wow - good for you FP. I use a huge daytimer myself but don't believe I've ever transposed special events or awards those I care about have received in the past. Don't believe I've ever re-written any little notes of the things they felt strongly about either. You must have one HUGE planner - and a whole lot of time at the beginning of each year!

When building client lists, I used to use recipe cards but since keeping up with the organization of who I needed to write to when etc. became so time consuming, I'm grateful beyond measure for database software! You can always back up those and calendars onto CDs or DVDs too - just in case.

Of course, co-workers used to think I was nuts sending personalized cards to over 2,500 past visitors. At least they did until my income surpassed theirs by about 450% - even in the off season.

Bottom line, no matter what method one uses, the personal touch still makes everyone feel great - and remembering their special dates bring smiles that last a lifetime :)

I have a planner on my desk in which I record important dates - I don't trust electronic reminder devices - and it's my job to remind my husband of significant dates. It works - as long as I remember to check in my planner everyday! :P

I'm so glad you did remember to visit badcompany! I appreciate it and if you decide this type of book is something you'd utilize, let me know, I'll bind one up for you :) A simple 3 ring binder might be easier though - that way you could add people you may have forgotten, or organize them by birthday months - or who's really on board and not so much... It is always a pleasure to journey a bit with you - you don't seem rusty at all on hp!

Thanks katyzzz :) The best digital scrapbooking software I've found is through Broderbund.com "Creating Keepsakes Scrapbook Designer". Have tried hundreds and none beat it for ease of use - just in case you'd like easier formatting. As a pro on digital art/photography, I'm sure you'd have no problem creating them though :)

I'm sure there's a "shame on all of us" at one time or another Hawkesdream. We know how awesome it feels when others remember our special dates and times but without having a convenient, ongoing spot to mark theirs, we forget. Glad you like the idea and as always, appreciate you stopping by :)
