Skunks and the Bears

Updated on April 2, 2012

Skunks and the Bears

"Only skunks and the bears
sleep during the day!"
my sweet mommy dearest
would consistently say
as she stood at my doorway
and called out my name...
"Get out of that bed or
you'll end up the same!"
And she did not desist until
I would arise...
but the wisdom she held
I could not recognize.
Now she is gone to
her heavenly rest,
and I have matured to see
"Mother Knew Best..."
And those words that I dreaded
the most, I now say...
to my sons, "Only skunks and
the bears sleep all day!"

This reminds me so much of my own Mom. Not the phrase -- this is the first time I've heard it -- but she never let me sleep in. Like that quote from True Grit -- "I never heard of anyone who stayed in bed past 10 o' clock unless they were sick" :-)

Thank you, Just Ask Susan and Call me Jon! I wouldn't be surprised if my mom heard that from her mom...I just find it a little ironic how things that go around keep coming around, sometimes, and we get the opportunity to walk on both sides of the fence! I so appreciate your visits and great comments! Have a great day!

fantastic poem! it had a very story like feel to it. I agree with the previous comment from Just Ask Susan, I wonder if our parents got their 'catch phrases' from their parents as well and so on.

I'd never heard about only skunks and bears sleeping all day. It's funny how what we hear while growing up, we as parents tend to repeat to our children.

      Loved the poem!
