Song Lyrics - That's Not What She Wants

Updated on October 25, 2011

My friend buried his wife today
And hoped she's in God’s hands
He had to tell his kids
“Don’t worry, we’ll be ok”

He thought about their wedding day
And all of their plans
He had to tell himself
“Don't worry, we’ll be ok”

You don’t think about laughing
When everybody is sad
You forget how to smile
When you’re hurting so bad
But that’s not what she wants
She said, “Live your life baby
Don’t ever forget about me
But always remember
I want you to be happy”

Now she’s gone
And he has his memories
He sits and wonders
If grief has any remedies

Today he became a man
Even though he may not know
It was always in him
But it took life for him to grow

You don’t think about laughing
When everybody is sad
You forget how to smile
When you’re hurting so bad
But that’s not what she wants
She said, “Live your life baby
You need to be free
But always remember
You made me very happy”

@prairieprincess - Yeah and it's ok for him to find happiness now that she is gone... Thank you!

@Nellieanna - Thank you. It is heartbreaking especially for the two children. I'm going to see him I think this weekend but he seems to have buoyed his spirits. I think the exhaustion of the long battle is now wearing off. He is a quality guy and is very strong. Getting older sucks in some ways doesn't it and losing loved ones is probably the number one reason.... but the living must soldier on...

@Teylina - Thank you for faithfully following me. This one is important to me because it is personal. You are too kind...

@cosmicdust - Thank you. I wanted to give him something that honored her and gave him "permission" to move on with his life....

So poignant, thought-provoking, and sad. Your poems and, hopefully, song lyrics are so real I can feel them encompassing my being. Up and awesomely beautiful.

That is all the more heartbreaking, Mark, that she suffered so. My heart goes out to them -- and to you in sharing this sadness. And yes, we do all life with the death of loved ones - more as one goes along and manages to survive longer.

So beautiful and real. He made her happy but he can't make himself happy. Thanks for writing.

I'm very happy to see the two of you here on this one. It's a true story. It's about the wife of my college roommate and she passed a couple of days ago.... it was a slow painful dissent into the land of trial drugs and hope and crushing reality... what can you say or do? We all live with it....

This would be a great tear jerker no doubt put into the heartbreaking country songs. But I agree with Nellieanna, the other partner would want us to be happy and move on, we will meet eventually in the great bye and bye in the sky. Lovely Mark, simply wonderful...bravo.

OH MY. That is truly poignant and sad, Mark. But yes, she would want him and them to be happy. Easier said than done, though.
