Songs Of The Night

Updated on December 3, 2011
AudreyHowitt profile image

Audrey is a poet, classical singer and voice teacher, recovering attorney and licensed psychotherapist.

O my heart, I could not lie still

Nor linger

In the face of tepid night

And the dreams of trees.

They called me to dance

And in the silvered mist of morning

I joined them

Branches dipping and swaying

Filling me with the old truths,

The old songs

Of ancient spirits

who once trod and once danced.

The trees knew them

and know them still.

For in the time between

dusk and dawn

they trod still

and sing the songs of trees and earth

and of their joining.

Hallowed is their song

the wind carries

and blessed is the soul who hears.

I am a night person and I love your night poems. I like to think that all of us as poets are students of nocturnal wonders. Well done!

      Audrey,

You're a painter as well as a poet...images were painted with your words.

      Thanks for sharing this poem.

Thank you Theresa! I am trying to get enough pieces together for a couple of collections that make sense thematically. I have only just figured out that a chapbook is a collection of poetry--but beyond that I am not really sure of what they are or how to go about putting one together--so I think I have to do some investigation ---

Absolutely lovely. You have quite a gift. Will you be publishing a chapbook any time soon? Or have you already? I would like to purchase a copy. Theresa

...yes I agree with Ercolano's comments (he is a fellow Canadian too) and this is also a very impressionistic read which highlights your fine poetic pedigree as a writer and will be posted proudly to my Facebook page with a direct link back here ......

Trees often find their way into my writing as characters. I didn't realize this until recently. Strange the way our subconscious mind forms connections to things we don't even realize sometimes.

This is wonderful and lyrical and magical. Love it.

I truly enjoy your painted words Audrey, as a person not much given to poetry really, but I see images dance around in my mind when I read your work. Really. Ethereal. Great stuff.
