Sorrow, Be Still, a Poem

Updated on February 13, 2013

Sorrow, Commend Thyself

Sorrow, unwilling guide,

commend thyself to me,

commend me to the

four corners of the earth,

Sorrow, unwanted guide,

hold me in this solemn vow-

do not release me til I

have done my utmost, and then,

Sorrow, riven, constant,

take me over the Rubicon,

that tiny river

to declare war...

and Sorrow, do not betray me!

How I know your stops

and seams, am built by

your cacaphony of voices;

They, you, build in me,

til I must speak of all

that's wrong, that wounds,

that preys on the weak...

that what is wrong

created me aright,

that I alone will venture

past where monsters prevail,

Sorrow, old boat, do not

leak now, stay afloat, as the

millions of tears

I've shed must do some goodness,

Stay with me, as I stand,

persistant in the storm,

we who cry must salute you

but I, my own poor self,

Must go further than

your charted land,

must stand on unknown ground,

and deliver my deliverance.

Must turn you away,

poor tear, poor self, trade you in,

I shiver and shake-

can I even do it?

Oh, yes. if I'd not traveled your shore,

I'd not know where to turn.

But, I do know... Sorrow with

sorrow's wings wings away...

I feel her yet, but must stand alone.

as if I'd grown into a soul.

and with this soul tries the wind

afraid but willing,

Demeter for depth,

and Apollo for light.

but no one affords Sorrow

her place among the gods.

or if they ever did,

was it not to be passed over?

But for a time, Sorrow,

you will not come first-

we will resume our conversation anon.

Lily, I LOVE when you write like this. Sorrow, constant and familiar is one of your closest emotions. I pray you one day know peace and love even better.

Thank you for this. I'm here. There is a sweetness to my Sorrow. I must be careful.
