The Secret To Finding A Purpose In Life

Updated on August 27, 2011

The Secret To Finding A Purpose In Life

If anyone were to ask me "What is your purpose?" my immediate response would be, "My purpose is to contribute to the happiness of others through writing and public speaking."

From personal experience and observation I conclude that the most frustrated and unhappy people are those who have no purpose.

I believe the secret to discovering your purpose is this: Your purpose is something you absolutely love to do.

Your purpose can be anything you are passionate about. For example, in December, 2007, John Kralik's life was filled with debt and disaster. During a hike on New Year's Day he had an epiphany. He decided to write one thank you note each day for a year. This act of gratitude changed his life by the people who received them. He now had a purpose resulting in publishing a book titled, "365 Thank You's: The Year A Simple Act Of Gratitude Changed My Life."

Another example is a woman named Peace Pilgrim. From 1953 to 1981 she walked over 25,000 miles spreading the message of world, group and inner peace. This was her purpose.

Each one of us is given the same gift, the gift of life. The clock is ticking. For those who say they have no time to do what they love, a friend once stated to me, "If a person doesn't make the time to do what he/she wants to do, they aren't that passionate about it."

Therefore, I would rather get into bed at night knowing I spent five minutes that day writing than not at all. What a wonderful feeling of accomplishment to know in my heart I have taken a stop toward my goal of perhaps writing and publishing a book or booklet(s). Although my final destiny is up to a Higher Power, that's okay with me, for I love a mystery! Sincerely, Sparklea

      RYEM and ROSALINEUM:

THANK you so much! I pray I can encourage as many as possible to seek and to follow their purpose in life. I just read a quote today, 'Hmm, I'm dying tomorrow, what shall I do TODAY?" VERY PROFOUND. The writer was trying to encourage people to not put off what they want to do.

God bless you both, Sparklea :)

Unknown Spy: THANK YOU for visiting this hub! I know many people who do not have a purpose, and they are like bobbins floating on a lake. In the meantime the gift of a new day is passing them by...or should I say they are not paying attention to the wonderful blessings in them and all around them. You are doing SO MUCH GOOD with your presences on HubPages. God bless you real good today and always, Sparklea :)

EuroNinila: THANK YOU for your positive feedback, so much appreciated! I believe passion to an "igniter" of action. Purpose gives us a reason to get up in the morning and, like I said, the clock is ticking!

"If a person doesn't make the time to do what he/she wants to do, they aren't that passionate about it." I love it. If you want to do something, you will do it, no doubt about it, and if you don't do it, then you must not really want to!

Loved this hub you can inspire a lot of people with this :)

Oh, Vinaya, I have read Victor Frankl's book, and he is a great testimony, after what he went through! In fact,

I have read several books written by Holocaust survivors, whose purpose was but one thing: to survive, to live!

I so much appreciate your taking time to read this, and I thank you from my heart for your feedback. Blessings, Sparklea :)

“Man must have meaning in his life,” said Viktor E. Frankl, Austrian Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry and the author of Man’s Search for Meaning. According to him when we have purpose, our life will be easy, and long.

Thanks for sharing life's wonderful lesson.

teacherjoe52 Thank you so much for reading my hub. Yes, I agree the best purpose in life is to have a deep relationship with Jesus. Then everything else will fall into place. I could not live without Jesus in my heart. Blessings, always, Sparklea :)

Larry: You are such a genuine, sincere individual! Yes, we all have responsibilities, which is different from purpose. My personal opinion is that you love to write or you would not be on HubPages. Have you ever thought of logging your experience about almost dying and turning it into a speech or booklet to encourage others? The surgeon saying to you, "Somebody is not through with you yet"...perhaps you need to tell your story. Just a thought! If you love to write on HubPages, you ARE doing something you love. Blessings that follow is a bonus: comments from other hubbers, enjoying reading other hubs, as well as your positive feedback. Your comments have been a HUGE source of encouragemnent to this hubber! THANK YOU for your lovely note, as always, and keep writing those hubs! Blessings, Sparklea :)

      Sparklea:

You have raised an issued that has perplexed me for years. I have no idea what my purpose is. I know my responsibilities to my family, friends, co-workers (when I had a job) my church, etc. But despite having almost dying once and being told by surgeon that "somebody is not through with you yet." I still do not know my purpose. I commend you for your self-assurance, it is a testament to your faith and abilities. As always, your Hubs are thought provoking and interesting.
