Spices That Talk - A Funny Poem

Updated on March 2, 2018

I went into my kitchen looking to see

Who was making all the noise

Who could it be

Then I saw Basil and Sage looking at me

Laughing and giggling pointing at Bay Leaf

Nutmeg and Cinnamon were there too

Rolling around clinking as jars do

Rosemary was the first to speak

We want to run through Lemongrass

We think it would be sweet in this heat

Chives have offered to take us on a long drive

To get out and see the countryside

We could stop at the groves

Pipes up Garlicand Cloves

Excuse me but I have a small request says, Fennel,

I would like to stop and see puppies at the Kennel

Clearing her throat and whispering sparsely

The fresh air would be good for me, said Parsley

Can I bring all my seeds with me asks Cardamom

If I leave them behind I will not be a good Mom

What shall I wear says Dill

Would something green make me look like a pill

What are you afraid of answers Cumin

You silly spice it’s not like you’re human

Don’t you pick on him says celery seed

Be nice, be polite, we all have needs

That’s right, we all should treat each other with respect

Spoke up Lemon Pepper, or you will get decked

The mustard seed started heating up

Let’s go now before I erupt

Ginger started to roll to the door

Come on gang, we may see the shore

Right behind you said Alum

It has been years since I have swum

So into the car, the spices did pile

Off for a ride, they were all smiles

Cayenne Pepper was lagging behind

Run said Curry we are all in a hurry

As the car drove off down the road

I was scratching my head, it was about to explode

This is so humorous! I adore and use word pictures often. I could just imagine all the spices ascending from the cupboard, onto the counter, to the floor and out the door.

I am rather ignorant of spices. I grew up where spices mostly meant salt and pepper. Now I know enough to recognize the names of the spices you mention but only a few of teh uses. It is a cleaver poem though.

....well I always thought you were a 'spicy' gal Susan but this certainly takes the proverbial poetic cake my friend ...and congratulations on joining the ranks of the elite - I have always admired your writing and your choice of hub subjects.

I sincerely hope you are having a terrific safe and happy summer thus far my fellow Canadian but it's funny how time goes and it's August already.

lake erie time 10:44am - making good use of the lake this summer - I'm jumping in there right now as a matter of fact.

Cardisa, I think it is the heat that is getting to me :)

Ruby, You just never know what those spices are going to be planning.

attemptedhumour, I like your joke :)

Truckstop Sally, I wanted to put all the spices in the picture that are in my cuboard, but then I thought, then I will have so many to put back. I put red peppers on rice, and potatoes and so many other things.

Sharyn and Movie Master, Thanks so much, glad you liked it.

This hub is pretty clever, awesome and funny

But you forgot to mention the butter and honey

I know they're not spices, I know that it's true

but trying to cook without'em could prove impossible to you.

I hope this doesn't cause between us some tention

I did vote up along with the others I mentioned

So cute Susan! I just cleaned out my spice cabinet - next time I will be thinking of this poem:) I was shocked to find I had Tarragon! So I made your salmon recipe.

I love the imagery - especially running through Lemongrass! That does sound sweet! Really clever - up and all that! I kept hearing a tune as I read it - whimsical!
