Subscribing to magazines

Updated on March 17, 2012

How many magazines are there out there in the world? In how many different languages can you find magazines? How many magazines can one person or family subscribe too? I am sure that this goes through some of the peoples heads as they walk past the magazine section in the stores.

I happen to work in a place that we get about 66 magazines for adults and 9 magazines for the children. The place that I work in is the library and we get a lot of people who come to just look at the magazines. We allow them to check it out and I have noticed the most of the popular magazines that get checked out are about celebrity news, fashion, and do it yourself magazines. Then we also get the Spanish magazines for those people who like to read in Spanish and get into some gossip. Just thinking of how much magazines we get made me think, how many people subscribe to all these magazines? I look through all these magazines and must admit some are interesting and there are few that isn't too interesting.

We also get many donations of magazines that people have subscribed to and it surprised me on how old these magazines are. I start to wonder, how many years have they subscribed to that certain magazine and what made them want to get that magazine on a monthly or weekly basis.

They say people seem to be purchasing or subscribing to more magazines now and that is believable in a way because they do offer many different advices or even tips on certain many subjects that may not always be found online or even in a book. This is so true in the magazines that have world news, you cannot always find world news online at times unless you have a subscription.

There is one magazine that I decided to subscribe to and I am sure there are some other women who would think the same thing. I subscribed to Cosmopolitan as soon as I started reading it at the library, yes we had it there and I could of just read it and checked it out but I wanted to have my own copy because I am the type to write inside the magazine and make comments. Who doesn't do that when they get a magazine. The reason that I can give to subscribing to Cosmopolitan is because it has so many topics that pertain to the way I like to think. It offers some great advice in certain topics that women know about too well. Of course there is also one for men now but it is online and they are able to subscribe to that and get in on a tablet if they have one or even just get on the computer and log in.

There are many more magazines that one can subscribe too, however one does not want to just have them laying around after reading them more than once. If one thinks about it, you do not always have the money to even subscribe to a magazine sometimes, unless they really give you are good offer. So with this in mind, do you subscribe to a favorite magazine? Would you renew it?

I agree with Jaggedfrost. Missing is a slant, I think. (Ironically, a facet of magazine article writing). Some possibilities: You touch a little on how the demographics that visit your office are drawn to certain titles. There is a human interest hook in there somewhere. Or, you could approach it from the opposite angle and talk about how magazines target certain demographics.

These are just talking points, of course. I hope to read more!

This feels like a rough draft. I would love to see this once it is done.
