Cold Winters Suck

I absolutely hate cold weather, so much so that I moved away from Milwaukee, WI. after having lived there for over ten years. Don't get me wrong I love Milwaukee and all the things there are to do there. The people are great and there are tons of things to do there like Summerfest. Summerfest is the worlds largest music festival. It lasts for 10 days with the gates open for 12 hours out of the day with free music on about 7 stages, after you pay the $30 or so gate admission charge. But I digress here, sorry. (Actually there isn't much of a point here in this hub, so just get used to it early on and you will be better acclimated for the randomness yet to come)

Even with all the great things there are to do in Milwaukee like the multitude of weekend ethnic festivals from Spring through the Fall I just couldn't stand another Winter of subzero temperatures, shoveling my sidewalk, spending 15 minutes or longer just to warm up, deice and remove all the snow from my car. Then once it's warm enough inside my car, just to go some place that may only take 10 minutes to reach once finally in motion. I had enough already! So I filled up my 2 army duffel bags and moved cross country first to Houston, TX., then a year later to Las Vegas to escape another brutal, cold winter up north.

So believe me when I say I hate the cold and Wintertime with a passion. I'll take Las Vegas's scorching hot summers that often skirt the 120 degree mark during July and August any time over working outside up north when its -25 F with a windchill pushing -50 F.

Yes I did endure such brutally cold temps one winter working outside as a tuckpointer, a type of masonary repair work. It was soooo cold during the winter that we had to add antifreeze to the mortar so it wouldn't freeze before we could get it into the staircase pattern cracks in the 3 foot thick brick walls we were repairing for the billionaire owner. But Shhhhh, don't tell anyone this, as adding antifreeze to mud is a bit on the illegal side. If the owner didn't care, what business is it of the governments anyways? The resulting bond was still first class, it just had a bit of an abnormal purple tint to it. Who really cares?

Milwaukee's First Elevator

This rather historic late 19th century building that housed storage space for Harley Davidson also contains Milwaukee's very first elevator. Is it no wonder that each creak, squeak and groan and other perfectly normal sounds such an old elevator would emit as it's dutifully carrying its cargo of humans and materials up to the roof would scare a bunch of guys crazy enough to work off of scafelling so high up that we must use eye bolts and chains to anchor into mortar over 100 years old for safety?

Yes i do believe this elevator put a bit more scare into all of us than any other aspect of our dangerous jobs, even though it was deemed safe yearly by the cities building inspector, than any of us would have admitted out loud. The looks on everyones faces said it all when it made another loud noise as we rode in it daily.

Right now as I am writting this I'm sitting on the steps that lead upwards to the two vacant apartments above mine that may contain ghosts now from being left vacant for so long. This recession started here in Las Vegas first I believe, and has really hit us very hard and only seems to get worse almost daily. I am sitting here in the sun with my netbook held tightly against my legs as I type this with my knees bent skyward enjoying this beautifull, sunny, magnificant Spring day here in Vegas that is more akin to Summer time in the rest of America.

I am in Heaven and don't even mind the small brown bug that just lazily crawled across my netbook screen exploring for food, or maybe he is just enjoying this wondefull lazy Spring day as much as I am? I'm sure if he also come from Milwaukee, then he is probably as much in Heaven as I am right now.

So while I probably will be stuck inside much of this Spring and Summer writing more hubs, working on incoming good links and brainstorming for more great writing ideas in my endevear to eek out a living online. I will have to be sure to take a moment and recall how much I absolutely love this time of year, and to get outside to enjoy it while it lasts before it abruptly ends and Winter roars its ugly head at me once again.

Then I'll probably come back out here with my trusty almost pocket size Asus Eee PC Netbook and write something a bit more serious than this hub.

What does Summertime mean to you? Is it going to the park and playing Frisbee, swimming at a nearby pool or just going for a nice leisurly walk with no particular destination in mind?

Maybe you have spent one too many cold Winters up north, have since moved some place a bit warmer and are just happy for the warmer temperatures like I am. :-)

Wish You Were Here

When I sat down here I had no clue what I was going to write about and just let the words flow down whichever path they chose to lead me. I did no keyword research, I may not do any backlinking or any other such hard work in an effort for more traffic. So if this hub is a bit crazy sounding I do apologize for this as I sit here enjoying this wonderfull weather.

If your hating on me for whatever reason all I can say is Nah Nah nah its a perfect 75 degree day here, wish you was here! :P

If your some place that is still cold I do truly wish you could be here to enjoy this perfect day in Vegas with me. Las Vegas is on sale due to the tourist and conventioners abandoning us. So do a quick online search and you may be suprised at the Hotel prices you will find. Think 2008 and cheaper prices, especially if you stay off "The Strip" in places like the old downtown. I'm talking about Freemont street where Las Vegas got its start before corporations and billionaires took it over for the most part.

How fitting as I'm wrapping up this long winded hub with no real purpose, beyond streaching my creative writing legs a bit here, that Cheryl Crow's "I'm Going to Soak Up The Sun" song should play on my small, portable, emergency duel powered solar and hand-cranked radio. This is exactly what I have been doing this last hour or so I have spent with you my loyal readers. So maybe in my pointless ramblings I have exposed a bit of me, my history and less serious side than in my other hubs as was once suggested for me to do in the forums way back 2 some months ago when I was a newbie here.

A Lonely Girl

Now a young girl of about 5 years old is hanging out here with me during the late afternoon as this great day winds up. She was looking for my neighboor's kids who walked to the store with their grandmother. Of course she was full of questions, wanting to play with my cool radio and Netbook. Which I really don't mind much as this is just how kids are, and how they learn the ways of this world.

Instead I'm worrying that her parents may see her sitting close to me on the stairs outside and get the wrong idea. I choose to indulge her natural youthful curiosity and entertain her a bit, instead of the safer alternative of running off such a nice young girl and just hope for the best knowing I'm doing nothing wrong here, and never would. It is sad that society and this world has changed so much during my lifetime that one must even have to worry about such things on such an otherwise peaceful day.

Well now I'm afraid Im just rambling on and on so let me end this before I bore you to death. Have a great day and wish you was here to Soak Up The Sun With Me.

I'm rather sure my English grammar totally sucked here, but I see no point in asking for help for a hub with no real purpose in the hubuniverse. So please forgive me, and I hope you enjoyed something you found here.

Nice read, thanks! I'm moving too, someday, lol. I can't stand one more winter here in IL, seriously so depressing. I'd be just fine if it would snow when it was 80 and sunny. Not happening anytime soon, I believe.

I do feel like I lack creativity, but maybe there is some hope for me yet. I'll probably stick with more tech oriented hubs though, as it is what I know the best. Thanks for stopping by Internetwriter62.

I really liked this hub, MyWebs, I like the spontaneousness of how you described all the events and that you wrote it on a totally carefree afternoon. You did a great job sharing that with all of us. It nice to see your more creative side. I hope I you write more of these. BTW, you grammar was fine.

Wow Ann that is very warm indeed. Las Vegas hasn't yet hit the 90's this year, so I know that must be very warm for Virgina for this time of year.

Loved how you describe your thoughts and feeling in this hub, mywebs. I am enjoying the weather we are blessed with. We actually hit a record in my area. 91 degrees where normally it is in the 70's at this time. Of course that only lasted for a few days and now we have a sweet cooling rain....nothing is like the spring and summer! Thanks for a refreshing hub!

Thanks for riding with me lorlie6. Next hub you may need your seatbelt though, that may be a bumpy ride. Thanks for reading.

Great hut. If I didn't have a granddaughter and elderly parents in my town I would seriously be gone, at least for the winters (I love the summers here in Canandaigua, NY but the winters are cold and sunless.

This is an absolutely wonderful hub describing a lovely Nevada day. Though I've never visited Vegas, I live in Bishop, Ca., and go to Reno quite often. You mentioned rambling, well perhaps you were, but I thoroughly enjoyed the ride!

Ahh yes Chicago, Milwaukee's next door neighbor. While it's may temps may be slightly less when compared to Milwaukee it makes up for that with a leather piercing lake wind.

I think I prefer the desert over humid, anything but the cold works though.

Rambling? Yes. Fun to read? Yes. Thanks, MyWebs.

I could really identify with your move from brutally cold Milwaukee to very hot Las Vegas. I made the same sort of move for the same sort of reason from bitterly cold Chicago to very humid Florida. And never regretted it.
