Swinging From the Vines
Just down in the woods from our house were some large trees that had vines growing on them. They were large vines that went up into the tree tops. My brother Jim and I got the idea one day that it would be fun to swing on those vines. We cut the vines off just up from the ground and spent hours swinging on those vines.
It was a lot of fun and was our Tarzan experience. I remember looking at Tarzan when I was a little boy and seeing him swing on those vines. The vines were very sturdy and there was no way that they were going to come loose from the trees. We would swing out there a long distance and it was so much fun.
The worst part about living in the Pocono Mountains was that there were stones everywhere. We would be swinging over the stones below us and I guess if we ever did slip and fall we could have been hurt pretty bad. Somehow I did get through those early years without breaking any bones. However, I did have my share of cuts, bruises, scrapes and I survived them all.
Jim and I continued to swing on those vines for the longest time until one day we saw our father riding his horse down through the woods. He came up to us and wanted to know what we were doing. Why he asked are you swinging out over those stones? Why he wanted to know I didn’t understand because he was watching us as he was riding up to us. He wasn’t happy about us swinging on the vines and told us about it very sternly.
He was afraid we were going to slip and hit one of those rocks. That thought had already entered our minds but we wanted to add a little adventure to what we were doing. Swinging out over those rocks was a lot of fun and did give us that Tarzan moment. Our father put an end to it and we had to find something else to do. However living in the country with plenty of forest land around us we could always find something. We had great imaginations back then and could think of many ways to have fun or get in trouble.
