THE HERO. Simple Rhyme

Updated on February 19, 2016
fpherj48 profile image

Paula has freelanced for nearly 40 years. She has a passion for her forte of Behavioral Science & continuing education in this field.

There's something on my mind today

Something that I need to say

As nothing helps me understand

So I reach out to hold your hand

The emptiness I'm left with now

We lost each other, tell me how?

I hoped we'd walk a peaceful road

With strength against the heavy load

Of those who said we'd never be

The ones we knew who couldn't see,

That you were made to be my dream

And lean on me so it would seem....

Your Hero I must surely be.

The weeks and months and years passed by

With every heartbeat I knew why

We shared it all the good the bad

Never straying... never sad

We knew no one would help us out

Despite the pleas we'd often shout.

Our walk was lonely cold and long

It mattered not though right or wrong

What happened to the hope we had?

Were we to see our love turn bad?

I thought I was your Hero.

The ups and downs were everyday

On bended knee I begged you stay

Your eyes were sad and filled with tears

replacing laughter through the years

What happened Babe? Who broke your heart?

Can I help? Where can I start?

I want to be your Hero

We struggled on with little spark

Was all of it a simple lark?

It pains me when I see you smile

With others as I grieve the while

For everything I give to you

And all the things I try to do

Is someone else your Hero?

I feel a cloud descending now

The darkness falls I wonder how

You've taken different steps than I

As though you soar throughout the sky

My solitude engulfs me dear

Because I do not feel you near

It's true, it's clear...I break in two

Your Hero is no one but you.

Hmmmm...I'm now thinking it's probably a special gift to mankind in general that the vast majority don't THINK like we do!!!! LOL

By the way, speaking of songs and your poem. . ..made me think of this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOPOD-oU1Dg. It's not quite the same version I first heard, I don't think, but I guess this is the finished product.

Actually, I read it that way at first. It seems that it is typically a man who wants to be a woman's knight in shining armor, so to speak. But then again, it can and does go both ways. . .a woman wants to be a savior-type figure to a man lost until he found her. So I can see how it can be interpreted both ways from different people.

That said, I know you. . .and knowing you, it prompted me to interpret it maybe differently than I would have. I know how you like to solve problems and I could easily see this as something either being inspired by something in your past or a loose recounting of something from your past. Except that I wouldn't picture you with the desperation and loss of connection sensed in reading this (at least not interpreted in the way you said as someone realizing the person is their own her0, because that is not a bad thing).

By the way, the reason I like that a reader can interpret poetry so vastly different is that it reminds me of the way music does that. Some songs are straight forward and obviously have a particular meaning. Others mean different things to different people that may or may not be what the writer(s) were thinking about when it was composed. That said, there have been a few that I've posted here that sort of shocked me the way people interpreted them. One of them I thought about explaining where it came from personally, but it was so vastly different than the way people were interpreting it that I don't think I ever explained what was going on inside my own head at the time. It's kind of funny now. Maybe later, I'll email it to you and divulge my secret. ;)

Oops....further (Better) clarification: In this Poem, the speaker is a man....questioning his female lover.....whom, he ultimately comes to see, is her own Hero..........There, that's clear.

BUT! Like I've said....the reader gets to determine their own interpretation! :)

Shannon, Funny you should mention analysis of my Poem. While I've taken a chance with poetry a few times, I can say, "I don't write poetry because in my mind, it's actually not "my thing." My muse moves me now & then to try my pen at a poem. It seems to happen when I have something to express and believe that Poetry may be the best way to do this.

If I am to understand that any message found in a poem is at the whim or discretion of each individual reader, yet the Poet, so to speak, has his or her own original intention to their message.....well then, there's no wonder why a group of students are inspired to discuss an author's work ad infinitum.....This for me, is the most fascinating aspect of Poetry, in general.

As I read the comments, it's undeniable how vastly unique interpretations can be.

So then I wonder, do Poets leave this freedom of interpretation to their readers and be content with it? Or, should an author divulge the true meaning touched upon by their muse?

Did I mislead my readers or is the deeper truth that my muse is speaking to me? (A spooky concept, when I take the time to analyze)

Paula did not intend that she is this Hero, nor did she believe this even involved her authentic life. As I penned these words, the Hero is a man speaking to his female lover.........Not, as so many have interpreted, the other way around.

So you see, how strange that once I expose this information, this body of work, takes on a curiously different inspiration altogether~~~~even for the author....:)

You "like that about poetry"......I haven't decided whether I do or not. Peace, Paula

I thought you said you don't write poetry? This tells me otherwise. It's very moving, Paula. And thought-provoking because I can see a few different ways to interpret it. I like that about poetry. . .when it doesn't necessarily fit one mold. Especially your last stanza. To me, being your own hero can be a good thing but that's in contrast to the rest if the poem. So maybe this person you.speak of is self centered or worse.

Au fait......That's an awfully nice thing to say. It actually does make sense to me, because I haven't the confidence I'd like to when it comes to poetry. When I read poetry by the authentic & famous Poets, it reconfirms my lack of confidence......seriously.

I honestly don't know what even spurs me to write a poem. My muse is as independent as I am, I suppose! LOL

Jackie Truth is, I've only dabbled in poetry a few times. I've not ever really studied it to know all the different styles, what they're called or how to put it all down in writing.

I certainly can appreciate great poetry & would rather enjoy poems written by others than get into writing it myself.

As saddlerider said first , not everyone has to like it [poetry ] , but even the love- hate relationship of poet to his paper is sacred . We struggle with our own mortality in words , in the rhymes of life , I know that much of my writing is feeble at best , self absorbing at the worst , but write I will ! As long as we like it my friend , we can do no harm ! Awesome words you have written , why ? Because I experienced your pain !......That's the beauty ! Keep on keepin on !.......Ed

Life is poetry, every single one of us has it in us to let out, express on our own terms, some may think it silly, many will feel the pain, joy, anger or sadness, if we choose the right words and for some rhyme, then the palette will explode with color. This piece I felt, I saw, I heard and was touched by it, simply said, this is Poetry of life. Brilliantly versed, I felt yours and his pain, you reached me, therefore it's poetry to the soul. Hugs

What an awesome surprise to find when I was thinking about you and stopped by to say hello! I seriously think this simple rhyme would make a great country song. I nominate Brad Paisley to sing the vocals! :))

I've been graced by a visit from a trio of lovely ladies......and I see that the females can instantly relate to my story of the Hero......The withering, elusive Hero.......whom we've all known at a time in our life.....and we danced with him and were swept away on his strong white steed....Our handsome hero who defended and protected us and placed us upon a throne.....

Only to awaken from our fantasy......and know that we are, each of us, our own true Hero.............

Awesome poem Paula, yes sometimes we don't see that 'losing' in a relationship, it seems fine but then something snaps and it goes farther and farther away, you said it perfectly!

    Hi, Paula,

This poem is hauntingly beautiful. One can feel the heart's heaviness

in coming to terms to a relationship where the spark has died.

You have proven. beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are indeed a poet.

Congratulations on your new status in life.

    Great job, Paula!

    FA.....(Wow!...Congratulations on your 100 hubber score! It's such a confidence-booster! I remember how thrilled I was....for a whole 2 weeks at 100!! LOL)

There are 2 ways to look at this rhyme.....of course, possibly more than 2....but.....it is sad from the male perspective......and perhaps positive and inspiring from the female stance.

It's not a bad thing for a woman to be a strong, independent, self-assured "Hero" to herself. Know what I mean?

Thanks FA....always good to see you!

Ann...you're too kind. I intended for it to be "simple" (thus my title)....because between you and me girlfriend......I've come to realize that relationships and/or the demise of them.....are not at all as dramatic as we may have made them in our youth!..........Smile.

  • annart profile image

I love this. It has a simple form but says so much and is full of emotion. You've described so many stages of a relationship and made us identify with some.

    It's different and that's good!

JG....I have no secrets from my fellow writers. I am not a poet....not an authentic one anyway. I probably know as little about it as you.

Sometimes I just like to tread off the beaten path.....it's just the way I roll.

If one of our really great Poets here on our site tells me to give it up......I will. The thing is, they're really too nice to be direct.

So...if my poetry sucks for real.....I can blame Rick and Vincent and Martie and all the others!!

Thanks for the pat on the back. This poetry thing and me ....I don't know....it's a really questionable relationship. Something strange about why I keep trying. Over and out, bro!
