The Wildwood Flower

By: Wayne Brown

Things ain’t been the same since Willie got that ol’ guitar

Says he needs time to practice if he’s gonna be a star

Now he don’t work, just sits on the porch hour after hour

Pickin’ that ol’ guitar and singin’ The Wildwood Flower

Now Willie ain’t never been one to work, not on his best day

He’d rather lay around and sleep or drink Jack and play

Now that he has that ol’ guitar he don’t even stop to shower

Just sits there on the porch playin’ The Wildwood Flower

The man down at the draft board said Willie ain’t fit to serve

Says he’s got things in his head, maybe a pinched nerve

But that don’t seem to stop him from singin’ hour upon hour

That one ol’ song we all know, The Wildwood Flower

Ol’ Willie went to the radio station and asked to be on the air

They paid him a little money to play a while over there

And after he had hit four or five high notes kind of sour

He just stopped and started to pickin’ The Wildwood Flower

Mama said we need to git down the road and leave ol’ Willie alone

She says he needs some time to practice and give his skills a hone

I got my doubts about just how much ignorance one can overpower

But Willie don’t pay no mind; keeps pickin’ The Wildwood Flower

Some things are certain and others are for sure down on the farm

Just ‘cause you got a guitar don’t mean the ladies you can charm

Willie done got the big head thinkin’ he’s got that star power

But the girls just giggle and run when he sings The Wildwood Flower

One day I’ll catch ol’ Willie sleepin’ and grab that ol’ guitar

I’ll strum them strings and sing a note, heck I might be a star

The girls will see my name in lights; all that electricity can power

And I’ll be up there on the stage singin’ The Wildwood Flower

Cause there’s one thing that I’m sure of; it won’t never change

There’s some songs Willie can’t sing ‘cause he ain’t got the range

Yeah, he sung with might near everyone; put out duets by the hour

But the one song that he don’t sing is that dadburn Wildwood Flower

@Mimi721wis...And probably the joint he is smoking too! LOL! Willie just seems to want to perform music...the rest seems rather immaterial to him. WB

Nice Wayne,I love Willie. Never met him but I've always thought of him as kindhearted man that would give anyone the bandanna off his head.

@thebluestar...Glad I can be an inspiration. Poetry is a great alternative for me and it seems to help my writing in that it causes one to pick and choose words wisely. WB

@epigramman...Willie smokin' weed on the roof of the White House with Bill Clinton...makes you wonder if either one inhaled! LOL! Thanks Colin! WB

....well I love Willie almost as much as I love Wayne Brown's writing - well almost, and yes as you know Willie loves his 'smoke' so maybe this should be called the Wildwood Weed - lol - he's the only person I know that actually smoked a reefer on the roof of the White House (when Clinton was smoking Monica's cigar - lol)

and if there is a man who is cooler than Willie than it's got to be Wayne Brown ...... or Slim Pickens!

@Hypenbird...Good for you...have fun with it I say! Maybe I can get a record deal out of it if enough people sing it! WB

@Fiddleman...Thanks much for that piece of history. I was unaware that A.P. had modified another song to get this one. He sure picked one with lasting power...guess it was in the chords and notes. WB

@onlinearticlespk...of course it is! LOL! WB

@DJ Funktual...I'll admit I have done my share of singing that ditty! LOL! WB

@Pollyannalana...you have the same complaint my wife has about the guitar...fingernails and callouses...girls! Still, I like 'em when they're not all calloused up! LOL! You need to try the Dolly Parton flat-finger style of chording...I think you have to detune your guitar so you can make the chord formations differently but she seems to get away with it. WB

I can't say Willie was a singer I call a favorite but I have always liked him, he feels like an old friend. I think everyone who plays guitar probably played Wildwood Flower. I picked the tune out myself but Wendy won out and then I saw I would have no fingernails and calloused fingers so I quit. Was fun for awhile.

Wayne, While the Carters did record The Wildwood Flower with the great picking by Maybelle on that old Gibson guitar, they did however change some of the lyrics. Originally the song was entitle I'll Twine Mid the Ringlets written in 1860by Maud Irving and the music was by a fellow named Joseph Philbrick Webster. I had this heard when I was visiting the Carter Fold in Hiltons Va a few years ago. Just thought I'd share, picked the Wildwood Flower many a time.

This poem reminds me of a man who attended my church. He always brought a guitar, had no idea how to play it and his playing is always out of sync with the band. For months the music in the church sucked until our pastor kindly asked him not to bring back his guitar. The music is back to normal!

Did you see the Google logo today? A guitar!! They knew you would be writing a music hub. Ha! Actually it is Les Paul's birthday. Love the poem, and I love Willie too. One of my favorites is Whiskey River. I saw him in concert in college, and he played it twice.

Willie wasn't dumb as most folks said.

      He just acted that way

      So the people would say

Poor man, he is touched in the head.

Excellent...and that has to be one of the happiest songs ever written....if you feel bad after hearing that....there are some real issues going on...you words need to be put to music...sounds like a Roger Miller song in the making.
