Taking A Nap In The Middle Of The Day

Updated on October 9, 2011

Not Just For Kids Any More

The weather was great outside

The sun was shining and there was a cool breeze

My body said I don't care it's time to rest

It made its first attempt to take over and show who is boss

As I began to think to myself silently

The day is early and will sleep later

My eyes began to shut without notice

Hey, hey cut that out I thought

No funny stuff as I rubbed my eyes till they opened

I held back a yawn and I shook my head not once but twice

My head started to nod and my chin began to rest against my chest

Quitely like a bird returning home to it's nest

As I began to breathe peacefully , I am not sure but I think I was beginning to dream

Was I actually taking this moment and using this time to pray to God

I think it is a good time as any to reflect and appreciate

A time long , long over due

What would happen if our bodies just shut down automatically when we needed rest ?

Closing our eyes wherever we were without notice

Driving a car,flying a plane,walking,talking,cooking that would be awful

Luckily I was just sitting on a chair and relaxing with friends

They said jokingly going to sleep on us

I said it seems that way

I think I am just exhausted from being really busy all day

They didn't seem to mind much and continued their conversation without me

A few minutes turned into twenty or more until I would finally awake

I got a quick cat nap that seemed to give me a second wind and a burst of energy

Thinking back I remember being in elementary school and having to put are heads down on the desk for a nap

That was a long time ago

When we get to be senior citizens it seems more accepted for people to take an afternoon nap

Then there are young babies that nap all day and little children that get cranky if they don't take theirs

I am just in the middle of everyone and wish we could all just say nap time see you in twenty minutes or more

Because I have to admit it my body new I reached my limit

The sleep that I got would of been what the doctor recommended

So if your like me and just plain stubburn every once awhile

Close those eyes and give your body a little extra rest

You won't be as tired and maybe scientists will learn it will add years and zest to your life

Absolutely Fabulous...!!!! True, true, so true.

You have good friends if they let you nap , take no notice and still talk to you later.

My hsband does it all the time.

My grandad insisted 40 winks was the best thing ever invented. Love your style, Dream On.

I'm moving to Mexico, Italy or anywhere that it is law to take a siesta mid-day. :) Great poem that I totally agree with. I feel like a new person after a nap, whether its a 10 minute, or 3 hour one. Voted up on this fantastic piece!

Hello Dream On, I remember being encouraged to have a nap at school, that takes me back....

I am sure a power nap can only be good for you, a bit of shut eye for 20 minutes can feel as good as a nights sleep!

Thanks for sharing your nap hub, best wishes MM

Great poem. There's nothing that recharges us better than a wonderful power nap, except as Sunnie Day says, you're able to take a retirement "cause I can nap." Since fitting in the latter category a little over a year ago I now cherish my "cause I can naps." When I wake up about an hour later it's like the start of a whole new day.

Thanks for sharing this ode to naps. I think it would be great if the American culture as a whole started to respect the positive power of naps more.

Jeremiahjpwalton You might want to give power naps a try.It might give you new ideas and help your poetry. You might find more focus and a new found friend. If anything else you gave your body a midday break.Thanx for your comment and I look forward to sharing many ideas.
