Who Pays The Price

Tell me what you see when you stop and look around you,
Tell me what you see when you watch your children play
Tell me what you see, does the world today astound you?
If you see what I see, you’ll get down on your knees to pray.

Everywhere we look the children are dying,
But we’re so far removed, we can’t hear their crying.
We never take the time to understand their pain,
‘Cause we’re too busy chasing earthly dreams

Tell me what you see when you stop and look around you,
Tell me what you see when you watch your children play
Tell me what you see, does the world today astound you?
If you see what I see, you’ll get down on your knees to pray.

They try to solve their problems by picking up a gun.
A shot rings out, a kid is dead, my God there’s no place left to run.
They came to us once long ago we said, we just don’t have the time.
It’s time we look inside ourselves to learn who really did the crime.

Tell me what you see when you stop and look around you,
Tell me what you see when you watch your children play
Tell me what you see, does the world today astound you?
If you see what I see, you’ll get down on your knees to pray.

An endless quest for love they need so much to find,
A gang initiation fools broken hearts and minds.
The price they have to pay will surely bring them down.
Will we reach out to them or put them in the ground?

Tell me what you see when you stop and look around you,
Tell me what you see when you watch your children play
Tell me what you see, does the world today astound you?
If you see what I see, you’ll get down on your knees to pray.

If you see what I see, you’ll get down on your knees to pray.

CrazedNovelist, this came from an extremely painful loss to some friends of mine whose grandson/son was shot and killed in a drug deal gone bad. It is actually a song but I am still unable to sing it to them and it's been probably 20 years since it happened. You are right, we need to be connected to our kids.

Very good writing, SR. It's really sad and you're right. A lot of us are disconnected from the terrors around us and the children who do need something to look up to in life. The world is a pretty bad place sometimes. We should all definitely keep our eyes open.

Thanks for checking it out midget38. The music is done and if I can find someone to sing it with a better voice than mine, I will post it.

Lady E and alocsin, thanks for your comments and reading this hub. It was down on paper and in my head for a long time before I could sing it publicly. It came on the heels of a mother, grandmother and grandfather who lost their son in a drug deal gone bad. It was a heart wrenching time for all involved.

A wonderful poem with sentiments felt by most people. We do have a problem with gangs here in Southern California. But fortunately, there are many trying to help them leave that violent life. Voting this Up and Interesting.

Thanks for stopping by and reading my hub Lady E. This song has never been recorded but there are a few folks around who have encouraged doing it. Though it does not have a country sound at all, our little country band, Tap Wire, in Reno NV used to play it. I hope to get it recorded sometime.

Very touching words. If it hasn't been recorded I pray someone is sent your way to help put it out there. It inspires me to pray for Teens, not just talk to them. God Bless.

      Rated "Beautiful" and "Awesome". :-)

Powerful Scott, well illustrated. You have a gift for rhyme.

Our society today has adopted philosophies that abuse and belittle fathers. Their authority in the home has been chiseled away by feminism, moral relativism and several other similar modern beliefs. As a result, we see our children rebelling and making messes of their lives. I am praying for our fathers, that they would have the strength to stand against the onslaught of society and hold their families to a standard. In love and gentleness but with absolute resolve.

      In Christ
