Thank You, Mr. Pope!

Updated on March 2, 2011

Inspired by and dedicated to Alexander Pope..."An Essay of Criticism"

"To err is human,
to forgive is divine"...
Mr. Pope, thank you
this nugget's sublime.
Perhaps if we all
implemented this truth,
the world we inhabit
would seem less uncouth.
And if the pursuit of
all essence divine
became a priority,
what peace would align!
Yes,"To err is human,
to forgive is divine"...
Mr. Pope, thank you
for this nugget sublime.

....gee I'm kinda disappointed - I thought this was going to be an expose on the head guy at the Vatican - lol lol - and yes I've said it time and time again but your writing and the choices you make with your subject material always surprises me, inspires me, moves me, touches me, pleases me and in this case - educates me!

A nice, well written poem, as you always are so good at, Tender. But of course, for me, your poetic parable is a simple, beautiful prompt for a most important topic.

In fact, I would argue, "To err is human, to forgive is divine" is one of the base arguments where its neglect is at the root of many today's problems.

When we all accept each other as "human" and embrace that notion, with all its nuance and frailties, and not just in the context of a little respect and dignity, but also in a "humanistic" empathetic way, we empower one another to believe in our own selves, and consequently, achieve great things, and at the very least, forgive one another for being "human"...

bb, I am learning to forgive, an act that does not come easily to the human critter. Hence this poem. I so agree with you. It starts within and works out, I think...It has always been easier to forgive someone else than to forgive myself, and it is finally happening, that I am learning to forgive myself...but I see forgiveness, on the whole, as the key to much conflict that whirls around us and surrounds us in this world. Peace to you, My dear friend! and thank you!
