That Creaking Garden Gate.

Updated on January 5, 2013

Creak;creak;

creak;creak !

Sweet memories

of yesteryear's

and Mamgu's

(Grandma's)

creaking garden gate.

A sign of company

a warm sweet greeting

that sincere smile.

Hand held out;

a warm hearted invite.

That teapot brewing on the range;

mouth watering scones

oozing with melted butter!!

Whether a vicar;

a vagrant;

that warm welcome

never ever

cooling !!!

Creak;creak;

creak;creak !

Creak;creak;

creak;creak !

The postie on his bike;

laughing in jovial mood.

A letter

a postcard

from far away;

a closeness

such a joy to perceive.

The gift of the gab

a treasure to witness

so bubbly

so jovial

so bright.

Again that teapot on the range

shared with this character

a star

so much

larger than life.

A loud farewell

on his bicycle

he leaves.

Creak; creak;

creak;creak !

Entering the orchard

the hub of life

a life of evolution

never to be compared.

A seed,

a fruit

in a leisurely

procrastination.

Flowers and trees

dancing with the early morning breeze;

blossoms with lessons to learn

to remember

and

to cherish.

A haven of

delicious relaxation

slowly but surely

evolving through life's instinctive charm;

a gift for all mankind.

Hold to your hearts

so

tenderly

appreciating eternally.

A haven

of sweet

benevolence

which

assures me all is well.

Here my joy is doubled

in the bosom

of

Mother Nature's palace

where she reigns

with magical

and

tender love

for all her fruits of love.

The end of day;

footsteps on the stairs;

a young mind

fuddled with sleep

but stored

a hazy memory

of Mamgu's sweet kiss

as fleeting as a feather.

A character so strong

so tough

as hard as nails;

remembered with the

most warm

and grateful heart.

A rush of love

so close to my heart

Those yesteryear's ingredients

for a happy heart

gave me that freedom

never to fade

never to die.

Nature or nurture

to be debated;

maybe a bit of both!

Memories

never to be cast aside

never to be trampled

into the dusty dry earth.

Memories eternally connected

to

heart

and soul.

Memories to warm

even the coldest of hearts

the darkest of days.

Fingers of sweet happiness

cradle my heart

in tender sweet love;

allowing me to

perceive

the lessons of yesteryear;

to expect

to accept

to appreciate

to move on !

That sound

eternally

bringing

a rush of happiness;

mine to tenderly treasure

mine to happily and

so eagerly to share !!

Today my own

garden gate

conjures up

a sound so loved

a sound so treasured

a sound so true.

Mingling

so deliciously with

innocent laughter.

For today's innocent hearts

a home from home

I share with

all my being.

So happy

so proud

and

so eternally

full of hope and care.

Rising with ease way up high

to bring back

beautiful memories;

allowing sweet treasures

to fit

like a glove;

so softly

but surely

into each contour.

Not one tiny well hidden

space

left out in the cold..

Oh no

blessed with a layer of warmth

dripping with the essence of joys

treasured and remembered

eternally.

I bathe

in the

inspiring memories

of yesteryear.

Again I hear that

garden gate.

Creak; creak;

creak;creak !.

      ...it's funny you mention the beef stew -because with a slow cooker you can always add to it - so I added some garlic - and let it simmer while I was sleeping - so I am up again and it's 12:59pm - guess what I'm having for lunch? lol

      It's breaking dawn here on the southerncoast line in South Africa (my new home) and I can see it is going to be a bright sunny day. The ocean waters are sparkling the waves are crashing against the rocks and the lights are dimming in the towns around.

      This is my quiet time to read your beautiful poetry and have a cuppa.

      These wonderful words bring back memories of my grandmothers place, a creaking gate with a cover above laden with white roses. A time when ladies met on the veranda for morning tea and scones.

      Gone are the days!

      What, with your words and my view of sparkling blue waters the day can only be perfect.

      Enjoy the sunshine!

      A delightful read, and the comments are filled with more than just compliments since people are sharing a part of their own lives in response to the sound of your garden gate--a sign that your hub has reached hearts.

      In old Florida, before the building boom that WDW brought to the state, the "creak, creak" would have come from a screened door on a large porch which served as a casual parlor for visitors (and a bug barrier for the house). On a quiet day it also served as a doorbell, a notice that one of the children had gone outside (or invited someone in), or that the mail had come.

      Thanks for sharing your memories with us and reminding us of our own!

Although I nor any of my relatives had a front fence with creaking gate, the sweet memories of family and friends coming to visit is the same no matter how our homes and yards/gardens are configured. Reading this has me smiling and remembering many people. Thanks! Up, beautiful and sharing!

      This was lovely. I could feel each entry through the gate and the fond memories it created. So much of who we are and where we come from are tied up in places or things from our youth and somethings trigger memories of them...and takes us back to relive the moment.

      This did that for me. There was no garden gate but a squeaky screen door...it heralded each new person that entered...O, my. The rush of memories that brought back for me.

      thank you for the walk down memory lane. Voted up ++++

      I feel five years old again! I can hear my Grans gate while I was reading this, creaking away. I remember Granddad offered to oil it, Gran went mad, 'you leave that, I know when someone comes in when I hear that!'

      Made me smile and such cute pictures, aaah, feel all warm and cuddly now.......great stuff Eddy.

      There is something special about the sounds that are repetitive that we here in comfortable places. For me it was a windmill that pumped water at grandma's place. You have taken a sound and used words to paint a beautiful picture in my mind and I appreciate that.
