The Angel Wept

Updated on January 9, 2012

The angel wept,

as the hungry children slept,

there was nothing he could do

to soothe,

their pink mouths opened,

their round faces

so soft and smooth,

wishing hope was in their places,

survival was slim,

as he looked on

at their radiant and moist skin,

the bed sheets were stained,

mostly with tears,

as the dreams that nestled with them,

were empty and drained,

and the angel strained,

as he moved closer,

better to see them sleep,

he would pray then weep,

and then he would weep then pray,

it was his job

to watch over them that day,

the angel placed his hand over the first boy,

he sensed hunger instead of joy,

they had nothing to play with,

no balls and not a single toy,

massaging the unblemished flesh,

life so young and fresh,

hunger masking the stress,

he was the witness,

and to God he’ll confess,

he turned the boy’s head

slowly against the back

of the crowded bed,

sleep, because when you wake,

hunger would attack,

help them for heaven’s sake,

the angel wept,

because their sadness he couldn’t take.

      Frank,

I was witness to the gaping and hungry mouths of orphaned children in the crowded orphanages of Romania over 21 years ago, right after the revolution. I am no angel, but I too wept and my heart hurt. Today my Romanian angel is almost 22-years old, as are many other children adopted during that difficult time.

I only wish I could have helped many more children find homes where they would be bathed in love and never feel those pangs of hunger again.

Hello Frank. So many of us weep with the angel. Every person on this planet must get into action and make a difference. There is no shortage anywhere in the world, just unequal distribution. Your poem is strong and heartrending.

As saddening an image this poem brings, it's written with beauty and does great justice for that angel who strains for those children. thanks for this.

You got me again. What a beautiful baby in the picture. To think of one suffering at all, starving, is just heartbreaking. Sadly, it's reality for so many here and even more abroad. Thanks for being the kind of guy that uses his talent to call attention to what is too often swept under the rug. Bless you!

Up and awesome Frank. Wow, this is deep pal. It hurts the soul knowing that this really happens. It is a reminder of this sad truth. A good example of why we should key our eyes and ears open and offer a helping hand.

      An excellent portrayal as always.

The angels weep in Heaven continually because of all the selfish, hateful, heartless things people do to each other all the time.

Many people choose to blame God for these ugly things, but in fact it is people themselves, adults, who choose to let children go hungry because they can't bear to let go of even a half penny of their money. Money that they have tucked away safe so that when it's time for them to enter Heaven, that money will be sitting by the door in a little duffle bag ready to go -- sort of like the bag an expectant mother might keep ready when her time is near.

No one has yet convinced them that their money will have no value in Heaven. Neither will the history of what they did to collect it. However, their history of stinginess, selfishness, and cruelty will accompany them in its entirety to their new destination . . .

Voted up and awesome! Will share.
