A special thanks for those who are following. Know that you are dearly loved and respected for staying with me. Even though we are few here it is cozy and intimate and well worth the effort. Thank you.
Well the day started rather windy and cold after a light shower we had last night. Plans were to go fishing early this morning to a lake a few hours away. I opened the door and changed my mind. The days of getting cold and wet on the water are numbered. Now I wish I would have because a few hours later the sun came out and it is absolutely beautiful out here. I am sitting on the back deck soaking in the sunshine. I will see what tomorrow brings and maybe be on the road early.
Well it is time to see what is going to be happening in the life of this small town that has been invaded by the likes of Wanda and her following. Cuddle in close and just know that you are loved...Hugs attached and many licks from Quigley.
Chapter Eleven: “Quiet Meeting”
The flowers he and the Judge had planted were doing very well. They had taken root and were well on their way of blessing the front yard of the old gardener. Dan was pleased, as it was a hobby the Judge did take pride in. Often people would stop and back up to take a second look at. Over the years there had been many a photo taken of the landscaping. Yes it looked very good again this year.
The door swung open and the Judge stuck his head out “Planning on stealing a few for the farm, You really ought to be doing something out there Dan. I was past the other day and it looks barren.” Again came his laugh Dan so loved to hear.
“Maybe, better get yourself a watchdog, just in case someone comes along and takes what they need.”
“No need I have a trusted friend I always keep at hand, the name is 12 Gauge. Friendly sort of fellow that will reach out and touch you if you are in range." Again came the laugh.
“Come on in we are just about ready to get started, we have everyone here.”
Dan stepped into the living room and found everyone on Town Council; they were all fairly stone faced. About all they did was nod. This would be a serious meeting, as it would decide the fate of their small town.
Dan poured a coffee and after some small talk had taken place the Judge called the meeting to order.
“This will be considered an official town council meeting, allow the names and the minutes to be recorded according to the bylaws set forward.”
“We have two orders of business to vote on tonight, first will be the removal of Wanda Webber as Mayor. The next would be the installation of Dan Sidon as Interim Mayor until Election date.”
“The reason for the removal of Wanda Webber are many, for the record I would like to state and make it known Wanda and a consortium have plans to turn our town into a gambling center with affiliation of known racketeering and the Vegas mob scene. I would like to add Wanda Webber is not present at this meeting.”
Place all these documents on file as confirmation of this claim. They are to be kept as a record of attachments for the proceedings of this night.”
“I would like to make a motion that our present Mayor Wanda Webber be relieved of her duties. It has been learned the Mayor Webber has been in conflict of interest in her planning on buying up properties here. The plans for the properties are to open a multi function business center and gambling facility. The proceeds of such sale would be in direct violation of the town bylaw 231-3 Section 3. According to what has been witnessed by many whom have filed petitions against such gain. I enter these petitions signed by several rate payers as evidence to this motion.”
Pete Barnes a generally quiet man who had a small flooring business in Cedar Rapids stood and stated he seconded the motion.
“All in favor” the Judge called and all members present raised their hands. “Good then we have consensus, now lets get down to business and decide what our next move should be.”
“As an elected official she has no claim for any explanation other than the fact she is not meeting the standards we as a council have called her to meet. Her job description is clear in stating that she is to abide by the morals and code of conduct rendered by the ethics committee.”
“Drunken and lucid examples we have all seen in the past several months is not what we expect from someone representing Cedar Ridge”, if there wou;d ever be a chance of her doing our business i another city I would hate to have a black eye. If she does it here trust me it will be much worse away from here."
“I make a second motion that we ask Dan Sidon to step into the role immediately on an interim bases until we hold and election in the fall. I would like Dan to step out of the room so we can have a show of hands for approval.”
Dan stood and before he could leave the room there was a show of hands. There were none left without agreement.
The Judge stated, “I still need you to step out of the room as it is in our constitution to have a closed door vote, lets keep this above board so we have no conflict.”
Dan stepped out as they voted again. He looked at several of the pictures the Judge had hanging on the walls. Many were from his time on the bench and several fishing pictures.
He did overhear the conversation about compensation for his wages with the extra duties he would be assuming and finally Pete stepped around the corner and called him back in.
“The council has agreed unanimously said the Judge to appoint you as interim Mayor as of today. We agreed as well to an annual increase in pay of $10,000.00 per year. The increase will be shown as a monthly increase with a few extras we can settle on later. Of course we will hold the annual elections in the fall and you as well as any others can state your platform and go through the election process.”
“Do you in agree with this Dan Sidon” who spoke in his official deep voice.
“I do” was Dan’s answer, as he looked around the room for any sign of dissenters.
“Next we need to have you sworn in as the New Mayor of Cedar Ridge. Do you Dan Sidon agree to uphold the position of Mayor and hereby swear on the Bible that you will conduct yourself according to the mandate of this council and the people of this town to the best of your ability?
'Let me be the first to congratulate you Mayor Dan Sidon,' as he stepped in and gave Dan a hug and a pat on the back. 'Welcome to the seat of Mayor. Do you have any suggestions you would like to state Mayor Sidon, as this will be your first official Council meeting?
“I do, the first order of business is to make a motion to have that No Parking sign, Mayor Wanda Webber only parking taken down and the parking spot tarred over to eliminate any traces of the pink paint she ordered for it”
I second that came a call from Ben Rivers.”
“All in favor raise their hands.”
Every hand was raised high, as most in the room hated the sign and parking spot.
“Next I make a motion that council amend the budget for a salaried position as Deputy Sheriff at a rate of pay of $47,000.00 with full benefits starting tomorrow, bypassing the usual three month probation. The candidate I would like to see in place is Wes Phillips.”
Judge Wickers stood and said “I second the motion as Dan will need some help considering what we are facing and Wes has all the necessary qualifications.”
There was some discussion about where the funds would come from. Tina Baker who was on the finance committee stood and spoke of a small trust fund that had been held for contingency needs such as this.
A vote was taken and Dan had the approval to move on the hiring of Wes.
“Tomorrow morning at 9 we the council will advise Wanda Webber that she has been impeached and ask her to vacate her office immediately. This is all done through Section 4 of the code of conduct. Pete here owns the house she rents and he will give notice of eviction, for what ever he deems good cause.”
“The first order of business on your part Dan is to check into compliance of the Green Wiener. I suspect you and the health department can come up with a list of infractions which can close the place indefinitely. We have no need for such an establishment in this town.”
“As well I call upon you and Deputy Phillips to follow any of Wanda’s supporters. Cite them with every possible traffic violations, parking fines and anything you know you can pin them on within the town limits. Lets make it all but impossible for them to even think of staying."
“We the Council will be in constant contact with you should we see something out of the ordinary.” Said the Judge. “Any questions? We give you full authority to make life as miserable as possible to rid the town of these people.”
“Consider it done ladies and gentlemen I as well have a vested interest in the town and the people who call this home. It is time we take it back, matter of fact long overdue."
Dan watched the setting sun in the far west slowly fall over the horizon. This was a time that he always reflected over the day which had just past. He made peace with himself over any issues, which did not align with what the Word Of God spoke of.
It was something his dad had taught the entire family over the years as children. It had stuck with Dan as he did so daily.
A few tosses of the stick and he and Jake slowly walked back to the house. He took a slice of bread and a little butter. He sat and again looked at Jennifer's picture on his screen. Jake placed a paw on his leg. "Well I suppose I better share this supper with you pal and tossed the rest to jake. "Yes sir buddy, we had better start looking at getting some decent meals into both of us soon. Well off to bed. Tomorrow wil be a hot day in town, yes sir something tells me it will be hot."
