"The Annual Fear" (7) © By Rolly A. Chabot
Finally made it back home after a fun filled week in the interior of British Columbia here in Canada. Had a great time of spending time in nature and just enjoying all that was around me. This retirement thing is starting to agree with me after all. Funny thing when you have worked all your life then all of a sudden it stops it takes a while for you to catch up to the stop part.
Writing has become a full time passion now and it is very rewarding to be able to get up and take a break without having to meet deadlines like while I was working at a very demanding position. Write half the night and then try and work effectively during the day. Very counter productive on both fronts. While I was away this time I managed to complete about a half a novel and it appears as though it will be an interesting read. Something which plagues our society. Molestation of children by adults and in this case a parent. Fictional but based on some real hard facts on what we see happening. Our heroin in this novel has found a way out and is making an impact on the society around her.
Gather around and lets see what Dan and the gang have happening in Chapter 7... get comfy and please know that you are all dearly loved.
Chapter Seven: “The Process”
The old judge was on his knees planting the bedding plants, which he had painstakingly nursed from seed. Great care was given to each as he placed them in the ground.
“Grab a tray Dan and help me out, no real order of color or anything just keep them 6 inches apart, that’s what Rosie did every year. She would say that is how God would have wanted them, just drop them in any old way like out on the fields. Grab a cardboard over there and kneel down, hate to see you in that fancy uniform getting all dirty. Lets maybe pray as we work.”
Dan had just got settled in and after as many years as he had known the Judge he knew something was on his mind. He had but a few words at the best of times since he lost Rosie but his words were always filled with wisdom. They worked a few minutes then out of the clear blue the judge spoke.
“Heavenly Father you know where we all are in our walk with you, each in a different place like these flowers. At the end of the day, the end of a lifetime you organize everything and bring it all together to create a garden filled with color and beauty. I see that Father in all the lives you have brought here to Cedar Ridge, we are all different and yet we are the same. It is my prayer Father that you bring peace back into the area and use us as your will desires to accomplish what You have planned.”
Then there was quiet for the next several moments when Dan finally said “Amen.” The judge leaned back on his heels as though looking for a way to make the task at hand easier. “My Rosie would have spent hour upon hour here on her knees. She would talk to each plant and pray over them as she packed the dirt around them. I used to love sitting on the deck and watching her as she worked. Since then I have found great peace in looking after things here, seems to draw me closer to my Rosie. I certainly do miss that girl son.
“I understand, the same as I feel the same about Beth and all the color she used to bring to the farm. I was just looking at the fence the other day and thinking I should start to look after things better than I have been. I did plant some flower seeds on her grave on Sarah Hill the other day. Maybe that will be a start at least.
“Dan I hear you have caused a ruckus down at the Green Wiener the other night, even gave Wanda the bums rush out of there. She called me last night as I still sit on Town Council, she wants your badge. Seems as though she thinks you have been dragging her name through the mud and making her look bad.”
“Well what can I say about my involvement other than doing my job. Her name, well it can speak for itself as she is doing a great job of dragging her own name through the mud pile. People are starting to notice her for what she really is. Take a look for yourself as he passed the file folder over to the Judge.
He slipped off his gloves, “Looks like I have some reading to do, carry on here and I will make a cup of coffee and maybe we can look this over closer.”
Dan bent into the work at hand, this was good therapy working in the dirt, planting and making things grow. Beth was one to have the place covered in flowers all throughout the summer. Have a bare patch of ground and the next day it would be filled with flowers.
Several minutes later the screen door slammed shut as the Judge called. “Maybe I should hire you, you are putting me to shame Dan my boy. Come lets have a coffee and see what we have here.”
Dan got up, slapped his hands together and the soft earth fell to the ground. He walked over to the rain barrel, washed his hands and took the towel hanging on the nail and dried his hands.
“Oh my, look here at what we have, seems as though the lady of the town is also a lady of the night and much more. Involved with some real tough guys by the look of the wrap sheets. Good work here Dan but I think maybe you should be looking at some outside help on this one, the boys in Cedar Rapids a few years ago ended loosing a few good men over dealing with this kind along the way.”
“It is already happening Judge, the FBI have been in contact and they have been watching this unfold from the sidelines. Basically told me to keep my nose out of it.”
“Poppycock to that big brother stuff, they love their power, have any trouble with them and I will call in the big guns, you hear Dan. I have some old markers out there I can call in; Feds hate them with a passion, likely they are dirty as well. Never heard that from me, a State Judge in Vegas called early this morning after hearing Wanda had made a nest here. “Seems as though they had a torrent love affair and she had him wrapped around her fingers as quickly as it happened.”
“Bet that was a dirty one to get out of from the look of the information in your hands. Bet she would hold anything against anyone should she decide to get even?
"All you need to do is ask the Ex-State Judge. He ended up having to resign the bench and any chance of a political future, which he had been setting his sights on. He lost his chances, his wife of 40 years and the family who looked up to him has all but abandoned him. I hear from him every once in a while, he has turned out to be a drunk and his life is in shambles, will likely do himself in one of these days over the whole affair.”
“Then we still have the witch cruising our streets looking for her next marker." Dan sat thinking. "I had better be keeping a closer eye on the likes of her with you have shared Judge."
“That could be any of us, thus we need the Lord to stand in for us when we are weak. Not sure where you are Dan in your faith and life but I pray that you remain strong through all this, stay clear of that one, she is possessed and looking around to stake a real claim here.”
“No fear Judge, he stopped himself and said “Dad. I so love the sounds of calling you that. I will be ever mindful of what takes place with her around.”
“Good, here take this file with you, we have an emergency meeting coming up Tuesday evening in regards to Wanda, we are looking at impeaching her and basically running her out of office and town. That brings me to my next question, should we run her off we would be looking for a new interim Mayor and your name has come up.”
The Judge left it hanging there for a long while before he went on to say, “Think about it as I know this has caught you off guard, you could still stay on as Sheriff and work a few hours a day doing town stuff. The town can basically run itself but we do need to have a Mayor in place to make some decisions when needed. Just like the old westerns, the new runs the old out of town”, they laughed. In this case the Mayor would have the law behind him, after all he is the one that carries the gun.”
“Thanks for thinking of me, give me the weekend dad, that is a tall order to think about, need to pray and seek God’s will.”
“No time like the present son, please pray right now with me over this. Lets get the seed planted deep into your heart. We need a strong man with a heart that can love to run this town and I do think you are the man.”
“Been a long while dad since I prayed in public, a few years at least, if I stumble you pick it up.”
He dropped his head along with the Judge and they sat in silence for sometime before Dan began to pray. “Father I thank you for bringing people along side of me this past few years. There have been times Father when I have neglected you and yet I know you’re near. You know the great need we have in this community and we come together the Judge and I and ask that you guide us. We do pray for protection against the enemy whom has managed to infiltrate our ranks, guide and direct me in your ways as I consider this position. I know this is far greater than anyone but for you it is nothing but daily care for us your children. Thank you Father for your great love, in your name we pray, Amen.”
“Amen” the Judge looked up, tears filling his eyes. Welcome home son, the Lord has his hand on you again.”
